Egyptian man killed in Gaza; Yom Kippur passes quietly

Mixed News

Turn the so-called inferior populations into "laborers without leaders." They would perform "special tasks," the "heavy work" required for the "everlasting cultural tasks" of the German people. As distinct ethnic groups, these populations should be split up and dissolved into "innumerable small fragments and particles." Himmler envisioned minimal schooling for this non-German population in the East: "simple arithmetic--up to five hundred at the most; writing one's name; the doctrine that it is a divine law to obey the Germans and to be honest, industrious, and good. I don't think that reading is necessary."

An IDF investigation committee, headed by Major General Yitzhak Harel, absolved the IDF this week of any responsibility for the death of innocents in the last three incidents, in which altogether 13 Palestinians were killed, including six children and a mother. The incident in Bani Naim was also included in the investigation. The central conclusion of the committee is that "that there were no defects in the procedures for opening fire."

The so-called "Commissar Order" established the rules for the treatment of political commissars attached to Red Army units. Reasoning that political commissars constituted a "danger to security, embodied the spirit of resistance," the directive ordered that they be summarily executed upon capture.

In fact, the IDF doesn't need additional criteria. As Operation Defensive Shield progresses and completes its "pinpoint" missions by assassinating the political, operational and organizational leadership of the Palestinian struggle, the IDF is increasingly positioned in a frontal war against civilians. "The absence of a security record doesn't interest us," said the officer. "Too many terrorists today have no security history."

Justifying his actions at his trial in 1947, he asserted his utter conviction in the "military necessity" of the killings. "Jews," he argued, "posed a continuous danger for German occupation troops and might someday attack Germany." As for murdering children, he reasoned they "were people who would grow up and, being the children of parents who had been killed, would constitute a danger no smaller than that of the parents."

After the Holocaust, the examples of Jewish resistance carried out in spite of hopeless odds and almost certain death bear profound symbolic meaning for all people--Jews and non-Jews alike--who understand the human quest for freedom.
