About 80,000 unions workers, including telephone operators and line technicians, will stay on the job, and report for their regular shifts, said Bob Master, a legal and political director for the Communications Workers of America.

The current contract ends at midnight EDT (0400 GMT) on Saturday. The negotiations, which have been overseen by the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, have focused on key issues, including job security and health-care costs.
