Professor backs local anti-Patriot Act movement

I am a member of the Borough Council in my small town
of Lansdowne, Pa. (Delaware County, population
11,044). Recently the Lansdowne Council passed a
resolution declaring Lansdowne a "Bill of Rights
Protection Zone." Among other things, the resolution
expresses the Council's concern that The USA Patriot
Act and certain executive orders and policy decisions
made by the executive branch of the US government
violate important constitutional protections. Why was
this action taken? Why is a little town in
Southeastern Pennsylvania concerning itself with
national issues? The answer is simple: we are
patriots.

Durango bookstore owners fight Patriot Act
Peter Schertz and Andrea Avantaggio, owners of Maria’s
Bookshop in Durango, are leading a Durango petition
drive to spur political support for the Freedom to
Read Protection Act (FRPA), the Durango Herald
reports.
The FRBA would overturn powers of the federal
government to obtain customer-purchase and
library-usage records, and monitor Internet traffic at
public computer terminals without notification or a
court order.
While the bookshop owners say they have tried to stay
apolitical, this issue hits close to home. So far, 300
people have signed the petition, according to the
Herald. Other local bookstores have joined the effort
and the director of the Durango Public Library is also
making the petition available to library patrons.

Calls for international force grow
THE White House is coming under pressure from senior
Democratic and Republican politicians to approve an
international force of up to 60,000 troops for Iraq,
including soldiers from countries that opposed the
war.
Senator Joseph Biden, an influential Democrat on the
Senate foreign relations committee, warned yesterday:
"I think we need somewhere between 30,000 and 60,000
other troops. "I want to see French, German, I want to
see Turkish patches on people’s arms sitting on the
street corners, standing there in Iraq," Mr Biden
said. "We’ve got to get over this ideological fixation
on the part of Mr [defence secretary Donald] Rumsfeld
and [vice-president Dick] Cheney of not letting the
Europeans and NATO come in."

indicted on subversion charges and will go on trial
next month, a human rights group reported. Former
middle school teacher, Zhao Changqing, was charged
