the internet as alternate media

In the last few years, there has been a measurable increase in the "herding" of internet users.

The problem is less the gap in access than it is the megalithic attempts to capture users (e.g., AOL, CompuServe, etc.) and feed them predigested "content". It takes a deliberate effort on the part of internet users to get out of those boxes.

Does anyone think the so-called internet-highway built in schools is anything but training for the herds? Schools are nothing but "content" markets.

It's hard to estimate how many internet users are squirreled away in those chat rooms -- missing the bonanza of benefits in access, while they are still available.
