You have a family and responsibilites, so the first priority is to learn how to network with others who can assist in meeting those needs outside the formal authoritarian, controlling, dominant paradigm. How can you give your abilities in honest exchange for what your (family) needs are? That is not taught in schools.

"Turn down" other distractions until you've mastered the above. Along the way, you will find out a lot more as well.

Always know that truth is of more value than expedience, though they don't usually come in that order.

If at some point, you determine that an important principle comes before conformity, accept that there will be a price to do so and be willing to pay it (but also, there are usually means to negotiate equably).

Even though the "norm" is not right, not everyone who is not-norm is right. Discernment is not a birthright, but it can be acquired. (sorry for that one)

Do what is right. Don't try to "take advantage of the system" -- because it will eat you up.
