Antibiotic resistant pathogens aka SUPERBUGS have become a major threat to our health. Physicians are concerned that many bacterial infections may become untreatable. Doctors treat patients for viruses that are "no name" viruses. Patients are flying to the emergency room to be treated by Infectious Disease doctors who are not sure exactly WHAT condition they are treating. We now have Hepatitis A, B C, D, E, G etc.--when will it end?

We do not know when it will end, however we do know when antimicrobial resistance was recognized. Antimicrobial resistance was recognized over FIFTY (50) years ago. Penicillin-resistant infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus surfaced at that time and the birth of the superbug was evident. The National Academy of Sciences recently estimated that the annual cost of treating antibiotic resistant infections in the United States could be as high as thirty BILLION dollars.
