FCC DEADLINE NEARS:
NATIONWIDE PROTEST AGAINST CLEAR CHANNEL PLANNED

Playahate on the FCC: Monday, June 2nd is an important day for media
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is expected to vote next
month on new media-ownership rules. A majority of the Federal
Communications Commission (FCC) intends to ratify a sweeping plan to
weaken or eliminate rules that limit the size and power of media
companies. Several of the FCC's commissioners hope to revoke the
newspaper-broadcast cross-ownership rule, which prevents a company
from owning a newspaper and a TV station in the same market, and to
significantly increase the number of TV stations one company can own.
Imagine living in a community where one large, multinational
conglomerate controlled eight radio stations, two major TV stations
and the leading daily newspaper.

Given the damage that media consolidation has already done to the
quality and diversity of media offerings, such a scenario-- repeated
in communities across the country-- has worrying implications. While
FCC chair Michael Powell (Colin's son) has the votes to pass the plan,
the decision to vote on the matter by June 2 could still be challenged
to allow for more public education and debate. Want to have a say on
this issue? Try http://www.mediareform.net  or

In the meantime this Thursday May 29th will be a national day of
protest directed at Clear Channel communications which is seen as
leading the charge to further deregulate. There will be actions taken
in Philly, SF, Austin and NY.. To find out locations and times check

P.S. MoveOn.org  has set up a very convenient way of writing to your
congressional representatives about the FCC's wrong direction.
http://www.moveon.org/stopthefcc/  Its also set up so that you can
forward info easily to a friend. It will take a lonnng time to get
the Congress to move on this in a meaningful way, but the sooner the
rumbling begins...the better.

For those who live in the SF Bay Area
A protest is planned infront of Clear Channel Offices
[340 Townsend St] on Thursday May 29.. 5PM
