Spy in Iraq scandal shows her face

NEW YORK - A former US ambassador's wife whose outing as a CIA operative triggered a political scandal can be seen posing for some photographs in the latest issue of Vanity Fair.

Ms Valerie Plame, described by the glossy magazine as 'the most famous female spy in America', appears in a two-page photo spread in next month's edition.

Seated in a car next to husband Jospeh Wilson, she faces the camera but partly obscures her features with a scarf and dark glasses.

Another photo shows the couple on the terrace of their home, with Ms Plame reading a paper held in front of her face.

In October, Mr Wilson had said his wife would rather chop off her right arm than talk to the press, and would not allow herself to be photographed.

Mr Wilson, a former US ambassador who had criticised the Bush administration's justifications for taking the country to war against Iraq, claimed the White House leaked his wife's name in order to discourage other war critics from breaking ranks with the President.

The leak identified Ms Plame as a CIA operative, and the Justice Department is investigating whether a US law barring the release of an undercover operative's name was violated. -- AFP
