California Faculty Association Sued for Religious Intolerance
Los Angeles, CA – The Pacific Justice Institute has filed a civil rights lawsuit in Federal Court against the California Faculty Association (CFA). The lawsuit, filed on behalf of several professors, argues that the CFA has violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by refusing the accommodate those professors who have sincerely held religious beliefs against paying union dues to the CFA. Prior to Governor Gray Davis’ enactment of his “fair share” policy, California University professors were not required to have to join the union or pay dues to the CFA.
According to the lawsuit filed, one professor claims that supporting the CFA would be contrary to his sincerely held religious beliefs as formed by his understanding of the teachings of the Bible.
“This lawsuit is very important for the many professors who have firm convictions against being forced to support organized labor they fervently do not agree with,” said Brad Dacus, president of the Pacific Justice Institute.
The lead counsel on the case representing the professors is Pacific Justice Institute affiliate attorney Bob Tyler. “We are very excited about having an attorney with proven litigation skills and experience handling this case,” said Brad Dacus.
The Pacific Justice Institute has recently filed a similar lawsuit against the United Auto Workers union. Pacific Justice Institute is a non-profit 501(c)3 legal defense organization specializing in the defense of religious freedom, parental rights, and other civil liberties.
