Bush and Cheney and their ever-dwindling cast of corporate
clowns are claiming that NO Democrats every even asked any
serious questions about the intelligence or raised any serious
doubts about the wisdom of going to war. Not only is this a
complete and easily disprovable lie, which is bad enough, it is
proof of the worst sort of racism.
From the earliest days of Bush's case-building toward war, many
Democrats spoke out loud and clear about the war. They raised
questions about everything from 9/11 to the evidence of Saddam's
WMDs. Most outspoken of all were members of the Congressional
Black caucus, including John Conyers, was a keynote speaker at a
huge anti-war rally on March 15, 2003 in DC. Sheila Jackson Lee,
VP of the Black Caucus, fought for weeks before the war to get a
healthy debate brought to the Congressional floor...but was
harassed and intimidated by the Bushie warmongers. Sam Farr said
the only place Democrats could speak out against the push to war
was at protest rallies - and then those were rarely covered by
the media. "Those of us in the Democratic Party who have been
outspoken in opposition to this war can't just be swept up in
the president's sort of effort to put a positive spin on his
policy" Farr said in March 2003."It's important to have
constructive debate. When you take it out of the government
institutions, then you take it into the streets." But if you
take it to the streets, and the warmongers own the media, you
may as well be shouting into a vacuum. Look what happened to
Cynthia McKinney, the black congresswoman from GA, who not only
questioned the connection between 9/11 and Iraq, but who
questioned Bush's actions before, during, and after 9/11.
McKinney was, in essence, lynched by the Bushies.
On the eve of the vote to go to war, many Black Caucus members
made, collectively, one of the most powerful and impassioned
pleas to even be heard beneath he capitol dome, begging
reconsideration. This was not even covered by the media (I
remember being shocked the next day when there was not so much
as a passing paragraph in any news publication I saw).
For Bush/Cheney to make a sweeping lie like this and to imagine
that it could begin to slip past anyone's smell test indicates
that the Black Caucus simply is beneath their notice. Ie., on
the Bush/Cheney's racist scales - these brave Congresspeople
simply DO NOT COUNT. This is the worst type of racism - the "you
do not exist" attitude.
