A/K/A CHENEY'S RESIGNATION SPEECH
US Vice-President Dick Cheney on Monday clarified reports
that he called critics of the Iraq war unpatriotic, but he
reiterated statements that senators who voted for the war
and have now turned against it are being “dishonest”.
Calling John Murtha, the congressman who called for an
immediate withdrawal last week, “my friend and former
colleague”, Mr Cheney said at the American Enterprise
Institute, a conservative think-tank in Washington: “I
disagree with Jack...but he’s a good man, a former marine
and a patriot, and he’s taking a stand.”
“No one is saying we should not be having this discussion,”
he said. ”What is not legitimate and what I will again say
is dishonest and reprehensible is the suggestion by some
senators that the president misled the public [in going to
war in Iraq].”
Mr Cheney reeled off a list of reasons why “in a post-9/11
world, the president declined to trust a dictator who had
weapons of mass destruction”, including Saddam Hussein’s
record of having “committed mass murder”.
“Although our coaliton never found WMDs in Iraq, the burden
of proof was on Saddam Hussein,” Mr Cheney said.
“The flaw in the intelligence are plain enough in
hindsight,” he said but then quoted Senator John McCain: “It
is a lie to say the President of the United States lied to
the American people.”
Mr Cheney said any rapid withdrawal from Iraq would be a
mistake and that it would be akin to handing Iraq over to
al-Qaeda.
