Center for Constitutional Rights Launches Campaign to “Indict” Attorney General John Ashcroft

CCR has launched a new web-based campaign to remove John Ashcroft from the Office of Attorney General as a threat to democracy. The site, http://www.peopleVashcroft.org was launched today, and features an “indictment” of the Attorney General for his anti-democratic behavior.

Description & Status

November 17, 2003 — CCR announced today announced the launch of a multi-organization campaign effort to remove Attorney General John Ashcroft from office. Lead by CCR, the Web based campaign is intended to create widespread public awareness about the threats to civil liberties and civil rights posed by Ashcroft post 9-11. In a seven count "Indictment" that is the focal point of the Campaign, CCR cites provisions in the USA Patriot Act and other draconian measures implemented by Ashcroft, which CCR argues undermine the Constitution and International Law.

CCR envisions collecting thousands of signatures on an online petition which will be forwarded to the President of the United States, the House and Senate leadership of both parties and the House and Senate Judiciary Committees. CCR is also encouraging concerned organizations and individuals send emails to the White House and key members of Congress demanding Ashcroft’s resignation.

“Our goal is to spark a groundswell of grassroots protest demanding the removal of John Ashcroft from office as Attorney General. He has demonstrated beyond a shadow of doubt that he is a danger to our democracy.” stated CCR Executive Director, Ron Daniels. The effort is supported by the ranking democratic member of the House Judiciary Committee, Representative John Conyers.

Former U.S. Congressman Walter Fauntroy, who is supporting the Campaign, stated: “This campaign is an excellent extension of the Rolling Mobilization launched by the Coalition of Conscience launched on the occasion of the 40th Anniversary of the historic March on Washington. The reactionary and frightening policies of this regime must be challenged at every opportunity.”

The site, http://www.peoplevashcroft.org, features regular updates on Ashcroft’s misdeeds, as well as in-depth analysis of how Ashcroft’s actions are a danger to the Constitution and Democracy.

Support democracy by signing the petition and calling for Ashcroft’s removal.
