THE FINAL VERSION WILL BE VOTED ON THIS WEEK — AND IT IS BAD
After it seemed last week that the House and Senate conferees would support the Senate version of the reauthorized PATRIOT Act that introduced some reforms into its worst provisions, there was a total reversal yesterday when Democratic conferees were all but shut out of negotiations. The revised PATRIOT Act is more in line with the Bush Administration wish list -- I don’t yet have the details. It is expected to be voted on tomorrow (Thursday) in the House and maybe Friday in the Senate.
Even through our entire Massachusetts delegation will in all probability oppose it, we need to call our Representatives and Senators in their district offices today and tomorrow. Tell them how alarmed you are by the news from Washington, and how important it is to us that they say NO to the revised PATRIOT Act! Give them good reason to tell Congress that their constituents are demanding that the PATRIOT Act be brought in line with the Constitution!
It looks like we have to gear up for many new battles ahead,
