HOW TO CONFRONT THE MEDIA
The idea of confronting the media is a popular one. Dissatisfaction with the devolution of TV News is widespread. Disgust with big media is everywhere even if it sometimes expresses itself with a mistaken belief that the problem is a non-existent "liberal media," or just the fault of an obnoxious personality like Bill O'Reilly.

US FORCES 'USED CHEMICAL WEAPONS' DURING FALLUJAH ASSAULT
Powerful new evidence emerged yesterday that the United States dropped massive quantities of white phosphorus on the Iraqi city of Fallujah during the attack on the city in November 2004. PROPOSED LEGISLATION MAY AFFECT FUTURE OF PUBLIC-ACCESS TELEVISION
For every hour of "Desperate Housewives" on ABC, the nation's 3,000 public-access television channels present dozens of hours of local school board meetings, Little League games and religious services… Now, though, the future of the channels deemed "electronic soapboxes" in 1972 by the Federal Communications Commission is uncertain, as proposed legislation about how the telecommunications industry is regulated winds its way through Congress.

CHICAGO PUBLICATION FILES FCC PETITION TO DENY TV STATION LICENSES
A “petition to deny renewal” of 18 commercial and public broadcast TV licenses was filed this week at the FCC by Third Coast Press, a community newspaper and website in the Chicago area. It stated that the stations have been “systematically negligent in serving the public interest in terms of their news and public affairs coverage, children’s programming, and hypercommercialism while systematically engaging in policies which brought specific harm to the Chicago African American community, the broader Arab and Muslim community, and other communities of color, by what can only be explained as their deliberate and repeated marginalization.”

REPAIRING JOURNALISM
Journalism's most serious failure, probably, is its reluctance to explain how reporters go about putting together a news story. A large percentage of news stories, for example, begin with a public relations announcement from a government agency, private advocacy group, politician, corporation, celebrity, or other publicity seeker.
