BIRD FLU: Worse than Bogus?

The Spanish agricultural minister stated this week that the threat of a global pandemic of bird flu was a fantasy - echoing similar statements made by many medical experts in recent weeks. Bird flu has existed among domestic fowl for a long, long time and people who work closely with poultry have been chronically exposed to it. Occasionally, someone with either a weakened immune system or cumulative exposure (people on small farms in China, for example), may develop full blown infection.

So why is such a huge deal being made of the "threat of bird flu." Once possibility is truly chilling. At the same time that the media is hyping bird flu, US government-funded researchers have revived the flu virus that killed millions around the world in 1917-1919. The excuse? "Preventive research." However, the majority of leading epidemiologists around the world say any possible research benefit cannot possible justify the risk of reviving the virus

So I find myself asking: Is the bird flu scare a "pre-cover story" for an accidental release of this virus into the general population (a possibility that some experts call "inevitable"). Or, more sinister, a pre-cover story for the intentional release of the revived flu virus into populations G.W. Bush considers "evil-doers" - like Iran, for example. I.e., kill thousands of civilians and call it a "bird flu pandemic."

Here's a Report from AFP, via News24:

Madrid - "Spain's agriculture minister on Wednesday dismissed fears of bird flu sparking a global pandemic among humans as "science fiction", saying the virus currently only poses a threat to birds.

"The idea of a pandemic among humans is something from science fiction," Spanish Agricultural Minister Elena Espinosa said on the private radio station Cadena Ser, as Europe braced for the further spread of the H5N1 strain of the bird flu, which has killed 60 people in Asia during the past three years.

"Outbreaks of the H5N1 strain have been confirmed in Romania and Turkey, while further tests are being conducted on a suspect case in Greece.

"Currently the bird flu is "solely and exclusively a veterinary problem", said Espinosa. Human infections in Asia were "in very specific poultry raising situations where the families lived with the chickens and infection was due to constant inhalation", Espinosa said.

"While H5N1 currently does not spread easily between people, many scientists fear that it may combine with seasonal influenza in humans, mutating into an easily transmissible form that could kill millions like in the 1918 influenza pandemic.

"However, Espinosa announced increased surveillance measures and that the stockpile of bird flu vaccine for chickens would be doubled to 10 million doses. She said quarantine would be set up around any suspected bird flu outbreaks, with poultry in nearby areas receiving vaccinations. "
