Roll Call:
Fitzgerald visited Rove's attorney Tuesday in leak case
10/25/2005 @ 9:06 pm
Filed by RAW STORY

Appearing to jibe with a report in the Los Angeles Times Tuesday evening which asserted that Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald is turning his sights back to Bush's chief advisor, Karl Rove, Roll Call's Mary Ann Akers will report in Wednesday's editions that Fitzgerald was seen at Rove's lawyer's offices.

Rove is among numerous officials who have been questioned about whether they had a role in outing covert CIA agent Valerie Plame Wilson, the wife of ardent Iraq intelligence critic Joseph Wilson.

According to Roll Call, Fitzgerald was spotted Tuesday at the law offices of Patton Boggs, the firm that employs Rove's lawyer Robert Luskin.

Though Akers says in her column she "heard about the visit from a well-placed source," Luskin refused to confirm "why or even whether Fitzgerald visited him."

Akers adds: "The rumor floating around Patton Boggs Tuesday was that there “may” be no indictments this week because Fitzgerald “may” need to seek an extension from the presiding judge to wrap up his investigation of Flamegate (or Plamegate for those of us who aren’t Judy Miller)."

Sources close to the investigation told RAW STORY Tuesday that indictments had already made their way to the grand jury in the case, and that others were in preparation.

Fitzgerald's agents also visited the Wilson's neighbors Monday, asking them whether they were aware that Valerie was a covert CIA agent, according to the L.A. Times and the Associated Press.

Rove, Akers asserts, "was spotted visiting his lawyer on Friday."

CIA leak prosecutor meets with grand jury, judge
Staff and agencies
26 October, 2005

By Adam Entous

WASHINGTON - Special counsel Patrick Fitzgerald met for three hours on Wednesday with the federal grand jury investigating the leak of a covert CIA operative‘s identity amid signs the prosecutor was preparing to bring charges against top White House aides.

Fitzgerald declined comment as he emerged from the federal courthouse after the grand jury adjourned for the day without announcing any indictments. Fitzgerald met separately for 45 minutes in the chambers of the chief U.S. district judge, Thomas Hogan, who oversees the grand jury.

An announcement on indictments could come on Thursday or Friday, when the grand jury is scheduled to meet again for the last time after a two-year investigation into who outed CIA operative Valerie Plame. The grand jury is set to expire on Friday but Hogan could in secret extend its life at Fitzgerald‘s request.

The grand jury meeting followed a last-minute flurry of interviews by investigators with Plame‘s neighbors and a former colleague of top White House adviser Karl Rove.

One lawyer involved in the case said Fitzgerald held talks earlier this week with Rove‘s attorney, Robert Luskin, and that it remained unclear whether Rove would be indicted. Luskin declined to comment.

"He (Fitzgerald) is trying to shore his case up. He‘s also trying to be sure he‘s not going to be surprised by something later," the lawyer said.

Plame‘s identity was leaked to the media after her diplomat husband, Joseph Wilson, accused the administration of twisting prewar intelligence on Iraq . Wilson said it was done deliberately to erode his credibility.

Fitzgerald‘s investigation has centered on Lewis Libby, chief of staff for Vice President Dick Cheney , and Rove, President George W. Bush President George W. Bush‘s top political adviser, and their conversations with reporters in June and July 2003 about Wilson and his wife.

Other former and current White House aides may also be charged, lawyers involved with the case said.

Any charges brought by the grand jury could be sealed, preventing an immediate public announcement by the court or the prosecutor.

A new USA TODAY/CNN/Gallup poll found the investigation was affecting Americans‘ view of the White House, with nearly four in 10 respondents saying they believed Bush aides broke the law. Another four in 10 said administration officials had acted unethically.

White House officials were anxiously awaiting the outcome of the case since any indicted officials were expected to resign immediately. If indictments are brought, Bush was likely to make a public statement.

Both Rove and Libby were at the White House senior staff meeting in the morning as usual, an official said. White House spokesman Scott McClellan would not say whether the leak subject came up in the meeting.

"We certainly are following developments in the news, but everybody‘s got a lot of work to do," he said.

Wilson based his criticism in part on a CIA-sponsored mission he made to Africa in 2002 to check out an intelligence report that Iraq sought uranium from Niger. Bush cited intelligence that Iraq sought uranium from Africa in his 2003 State of the Union address, but Wilson later said the claim was unsubstantiated.

Fitzgerald has asked witnesses about the Niger report, which has been traced in part to Italy‘s intelligence service, known as Sismi, U.S. officials say. The chief of Sismi, Nicolo Pollari, met with Stephen Hadley , the then-deputy White House national security advisor, on September 9, 2002.

The White House confirmed the meeting on Wednesday but would not say whether the Niger report was discussed.
