DOUG THOMPSONCold-Hearted BastardsSat Oct 25 20:03:39 200364.140.158.132 Cold-Hearted Bastards By DOUG THOMPSON Oct 21, 2003, 14:02 Well, it’s official. The so-called “compassionate conservatives” at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue are, in fact, sanctimonious, uncaring, hypocritical bastards. And the President who claims to care so much for the Americans he has sent in harm’s way in Iraq cares so little for the soldiers who have given their lives for their countries that he has not attended a single ceremony when those dead heroes came home. Not one. Nada. Even a draft dodger named Bill Clinton took the time to stand and recognize fallen soldiers when they came home. Not Dubya. He’d rather not deal with those who died fighting his war in Iraq. He won’t take the time to honor them when they come home. Even worse, his administration has banned the the traditional homecoming ceremonies that honor the war dead.In March, on the eve of the Iraq war, the administration issued the following directive to all U.S. military bases. “There will be no arrival ceremonies for, or media coverage of, deceased military personnel returning to or departing from Ramstein [Germany] airbase or Dover [Del.] base, to include interim stops.”In other words, no ceremony to honor those who fell in battle. Nothing. Just unload the casket from the airplane and send it to the family. We mustn't let the dead show up on the 6 o'clock news. That might mean bad press. The Pentagon has had policies in place since the Clinton administration limiting press coverage of ceremonies when the dead come home but the order was loosely enforced and did not ban the ceremonies themselves. But the Bush administration ordered the Pentagon to ban the cermonies and enforce the rules "without exception" because the homecoming ceremonies would focus too much attention on the body counts from Iraq.Hell of a way to dishonor those who served their country and sacrificed their lives.Up until now, I thought Bush’s bible-thumping might be sincere, that maybe underneath that hardened heart of a political opportunist there was still a shred of humanity that cared for Americans who die for their country.Apparently not. In Bush’s world, those who go to war and die for their country are best hidden from view, best forgotten. Reminding the American people that young men and women are dying in far off lands is not good when there’s an election to win. Must avoid bad press. Before Bush, every Commander in Chief who sent Americans into battle cared enough to show up for at least one of the cermonies when they brought the dead back to American soil. Not him. Before Bush, even when the media were not allowed on base, the dead were still honored with a ceremony attended by their comrades and family. It is the least a grateful nation should do when someone gives their life for their country. But George W. Bush apparently doesn’t care to honor the dead. He has banned the ceremonies themselves. Oh, he has put in an appearance or two visiting families and the wounded at Walter Reed but he can’t be bothered when it comes to attending a cermoney that honors those who have fallen.Compassionate conservatives my ass. The men and women who fought and died for their country deserve far better. So does this country. © Copyright 2003 by Capitol Hill BlueWho is this Thompson guy anyway? http://www.capitolhillblue.com/dtbio.asp =============================================“I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live” Deuteronomy 30:19IT'S TIME FOR YOU TO DRAW YOUR LINE IN THE SAND!concerned citizenThe EVIL HEMLOCK SOCIETY - "KNOW YOUR ENEMY"Sat Oct 25 14:08:06 2003HEMLOCK SOCIETY--- NEW NAME/NEW IMAGE !!!--"END OF LIFE CHOICES"http://disc.server.com/discussion.cgi?disc=149495;article=45785;title=APFNWe need to be paying attention to these types of organizations. In addition to the use of focus-groups to hone its message, highlights of the plan include:An aggressive public relations campaign, including creation of a speaker’s bureau.A renewed effort to revitalize Hemlock’s local chapters and new ones where there aren’t any now.The creation of a broad-based coalition of groups with strong representation in Washington, D.C.A bold legislative strategy that, over the near term, seeks to prevent the federal government from taking choice away from the states and use the national effort to bring political credibility to this movement, over the near and medium term seeks to help pass legislation in most states to give dying patients control over their own death, and over the long term seeks to pass national legislation and/or federal rules that support self-determination at the end of life.An effort to identify and work with supporters in state legislatures across the country. The hiring of legislative and lobbying professionals to assist us in Washington, D.C.Adoption of a legal strategy that includes identifying teams of lawyers in different regions of the country who are committed to our cause and who will act quickly to advocate/litigate for a dying patient in their part of the country. An aggressive campaign to increase membership in and donations to Hemlock. The plan is to be managed by a legislative committee composed of members of the Hemlock board and chaired by board chairman Fred Richardson of Portland, Maine. http://www.hemlock.org/news/EditNews.asp?NewsCategory=Special+Report+1 HEMLOCK SOCIETY--- NEW NAME/NEW IMAGE !!!--"END OF LIFE CHOICES"HOSPICE FOR HEMLOCK::::As Hospice professionals, we know just what Hospice care can, and can not do for terminally ill people. No one knows better than Hospice professionals about the suffering that so many endure, despite the greatest of Hospice care and support.Hospice For Hemlock is a group of Hospice Physicians, Nurses, Social Workers, Chaplains, Home Health Aids and Volunteers who believe that a terminally ill person has the right to choose a dignified, hastened death, over an existence of potential undue suffering.Hospice for Hemlock supports both the philosophy of Hospice and the philosophy of the Right to Die movement. We can and do support those terminally ill people who's suffering has become unbearable and request information about end of life choices. Hospice for Hemlock supports Euthanasia, Assisted Suicide and Self-Deliverance.We are available for consultation and support via telephone and/or e-mail. http://www.hospiceforhemlock.com/_wsn/page2.html On March 25 the pro-suicide group Compassion in Dying announced that a woman with breast cancer in her mid-80s had become the first person to die from a drug overdose prescribed in accord with the Oregon law. In an audiotape released by the group, the woman said she could not see herself "living a few more months like this," because she was once active but had become too weak for gardening or other favorite activities. Compassion in Dying said she died in her Portland home, surrounded by family and attended by a physician located by the group. Reportedly the woman's own physician had refused to prescribe lethal drugs, and a second physician she consulted had concluded that her request for death was due to depression. While pro-euthanasia forces in Oregon gave subdued reactions to the woman's death, Hemlock Society USA was less restrained: "Hooray for the people of Oregon," said Hemlock executive director Faye Girsh on hearing the news. "I'm in awe. This is an historic moment" [AP, 3/25; The Oregonian, 3/26].Together the Hemlock Society and Compassion in Dying say they have received 42 requests for assisted suicide. Hemlock says it was contacted by 27 people, of whom 18 were ineligible (because they were not terminally ill or not Oregon residents), four obtained hospice care after talking with Hemlock, two died before obtaining a lethal prescription, and two still wanted assisted suicide but had not begun the formal process. Compassion in Dying says it received 15 requests from seriously ill patients, of whom died of natural causes, three were ineligible, and seven are at some stage of the process [Id., 4/24]. http://www.all.org/legislat/guide05.htm ATHEIST ALLIANCE / HUMANIST SOCIETYFaye Girsh---Jewish/Atheist/HumanistDying with Dignity in the Age of Ashcroft :Faye Girsh from the national organization, The Hemlock Society USA, will tackle a profound and controversial subject at the next meeting of the Secular Humanists of the Lowcountry. On Sunday, November 17, at 4 p.m., she will talk about current end-of-life choices available to Americans. Ms. Girsh will discuss where Oregon's right-to-die law fits in: what it provides, how it has fared, and how it has been under attack by Attorney General Ashcroft. His interest raises questions about the future fate of assisted dying in this country. Ms. Girsh will talk about Hemlock's "Caring Friends" program as an alternative to physician assistance. Faye Girsh served as President of The Hemlock Society USA from 1996 to 2002 and is now Senior Vice President. She has been involved in the death with dignity movement since 1983. Ms. Girsh has been a clinical and forensic psychologist, and received her doctorate from Harvard University. She has taught at Morehouse College and the University of Chicago. The United States and California Supreme Courts have cited Ms. Girsh's research on the death penalty. She has spoken internationally, appeared on national TV, and has authored more than 30 articles on the right to die. http://www.atheistalliance.org/lowcountry/sep-11-2002.html OREGON: The state of Oregon has decided to pay for assisted suicide for people who can’t afford the costs. On a 10-to-1 vote, the state’s Health Services Commission included doctor-assisted suicide on the list of Medicaid-covered “treatments.”(Reading: “Oregon Medicaid’s Doctor-Assisted Suicide,” New York Times, 3/7/98)For more information from an ANTI-EUTHANASIA website, see: http://www.euthanasia.com/found.html ===========================# Funeralgate - Bush's First Scandal — The Webfairy, Thu Oct 23 01:06 * Funeralgate - — Webfairy, Thu Oct 23 04:41 * o The predominant leader in the death care industry — APFN, Thu Oct 23 05:16 + Promoting the evolving "Culture of Death" — Sallie, Thu Oct 23 18:32 * The woman at the center of the Texas funeral home scandal — Robert Bryce, Thu Oct 23 02:06 o (Cont'd) The problems with the embalming — Robert Bryce, Thu Oct 23 02:14APFN: THANK YOU FOR YOUR COUAGEOUS CHAMPIONING OF THE FIGHT TO SAVE THE LIFE OF TERRI !
