Get a firewall if you
don't have one.. the best I've found is free:
Its KERIO Personal Firewall
http://www.kerio.com.kpf/ After the month free full trial it reverts to a free version that is very acceptable...
don't use Zonealarm it leaks like hell.
How to configure: allow each program access one at a time to run/local access/internet access.
Most progs (like browser) only require outgoing access to the internet/local if you use a proxy.
Also you need to check you are not infected already. This can be very
difficult. Get advice & get a pro. Make sure they do root kit revealer testing (available via
Microsoft links). Also, be careful what programs you allow to run.
I use numerous free spyware/troajn/virus progs (SpywareGuard & AVG - does email as well).
NEVER allow active-x (particularly active-x scripts) to run on your machine unless its from a trustable site. There is a BIG hole in any system.
Use firefox that can help browsing.
Don't let other people use your PC. Restrict access. Otherwise they can load root kits & spyware &
Trojans on you PC.
Always DISABLE file sharing & block inbound access to programs like NTlogon + Service & Apps controller. Get a pro to configure your system for this if you are unsure - its V.important.
Also if you are running BitComet you should be aware there is a question mark over whether its a
Trojan or not. Some have noticed large quantities of outgoing data. Could be its sending out the contents of your disk drives.
As for deleting your disk:
1.
File sharing is on & some sort of network is linked
2. You have a traditional
Trojan/backdoor - web bot ??
3. You have a root kit installed
4. You have some malware - software that deliberately deletes these things
i.e. some active-x or distributed software. Beware of CRACKED software & CRACK generators!
5. You have a
colleague using you pc.
6. You have a neighbor whose has access to your house and PC.
The latter 2 (5&6) cannot be stopped by pass protecting your pc. But you can buy a USB dongle & software which will fully protect your pc from illegal access, even if they can get into your premises. Ask a pro. It encrypts
your drives and the decryption algorithms/keys are on your USB dongle. Its VERY secure. But it costs.
You should also get your pc drives "RAIDed" - this protects against accidental data loss. Basically it stripes and mirrors your data around a number of disks. If you lose some tract or even a whole disk then the system can rebuild itself. Simple RAID of 2 disks costs the price of the disks. 2+ disk RAID costs from about $500 for extra drives' interface card if
you use software RAID. Hardware RAID is for high income bracket only so pay a pro.
