Most countries of the world have their own patriotic anthems and
mottos. Each inspires pride in the people and pride in
the nation.
The United States Pledge of Allegiance is in a class of
its own. It’s a solemn oath to uphold the principles of
our great nation: democracy, national sovereignty, and
freedom.
It’s an oath sworn by schoolchildren and Presidents
alike. I take immense pride in reciting the Pledge of
Allegiance each morning on the floor of the United
States House of Representatives. I can’t describe the
powerful and patriotic feelings that are invoked when I
do so.
Like so many mothers and fathers in our state, I’m
distressed to watch activist judges attack the Pledge.
They are stripping the words “under God” – and, by doing
so, they are stripping the fabric of the Pledge itself.
These judges believe it is their right to interfere with
American traditions and practices.
You likely heard the news that the 9th Circuit Court of
Appeals in California recently found it unconstitutional
to include the Pledge in public school exercises.
To me – that news is both unbelievable and
*unacceptable*.
I am supporting a new bill in the House of
Representatives that expresses Congress’s disapproval
with the ruling. The bill makes clear that it is
Congress’s belief that the Supreme Court of the United
States should speedily find the use of the Pledge of
Allegiance in school to be consistent with the
Constitution.
Men and women have died in defense of our nation. They
died protecting our liberties, our traditions, and –
ultimately – our freedom. We will not allow activist
judges to do what we’d never allow others to do
----undermine our traditions. We will not allow them to
destroy our Pledge of Allegiance.
