President George W. Bush has nominated Harriet Miers, his White House counsel and an SMU alumna, to be the 110th associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
Ms. Miers received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from SMU in 1967 and was elected to the honorary society, Mortar Board. She served on law review and earned a J.D. from the School of Law in 1970.
Earlier in her career she taught trial practice as an adjunct law professor at SMU, and has remained active on University committees and boards.
In recognition of her accomplishments as a highly respected leader in the legal profession, she received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University in 2002 and from the School of Law in 1997.
“The nomination of Harriet Miers sends an important message to our current students about the value of solid preparation and hard work to succeed and to serve in a given field. She is an excellent role model,” said SMU President R. Gerald Turner.
“We are extremely proud of alumna Harriet Miers as President Bush’s nominee to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States,” said Turner. “As a graduate of both our undergraduate program and our school of law, she brings honor to SMU through this nomination and through her distinguished legal career."
