Team 4 News, CA - Oct 1, 2004 ... agents say they received credible information that Al-Quaeda operatives were targeting the Wornick Plant in McAllen, where MRE's or Meals Ready to Eat are made ... Reported by Roxanne Lerma OCTOBER 1, 2004 - Is South Texas on the radar screen for terrorists? Most residents hardly give it a second thought. "I don't think the Valley is prone for a terrorist attack because there's really nothing here to attack," said Tina Mendez in McAllen. However, startling new revelations from the FBI point otherwise. Federal agents say they received credible information that Al-Quaeda operatives were targeting the Wornick Plant in McAllen, where MRE's or Meals Ready to Eat are made for American troops. Prosecutors say troops on the ground, shortly after the U.S. invaded Afghanistan, intercepted the information. The Department of Defense also has a multi-million dollar contract with Amfels in the Port of Brownsville. "The AMFELS Shipyard is absolutely essential to the construction of vessels and equipment that is absolutely integral to our national security. You have 70 or 80 miles from you, a very significant part of the national defense infrastructure," said U.S. Attorney Michael Shelby. Yet security has been compromised. After an in-depth investigation, illegal immigrants were found working at both companies. They were all hired by temporary employment agencies, but still managed to infiltrate the high level contractors. H&H Meats in Mercedes is also a government sub-contractor. For security reasons they couldn't comment on camera, but employees say they are under strict guidelines to prevent a terrorist strike there. If the nation's security level is upped to red or orange, the plant must immediately go into lockdown mode. Then of course there is the Valley's proximity to Mexico. Neldi Martinez says, "we're a border town and they(terrorists) can come in. I understand there's a bridge opening in Mission and that scares me because it seems that we need help with the borders we have right now." The feds say although an attack is highly unlikely here, residents like Martinez have the right thinking. Agents say citizens shouldn't let their guard down. That is exactly what terrorists will try to exploit. http://www.team4news.com/Global/story.asp?S=2376913&nav=0w0vRY1w ------------------------- KGBT 4 - TV Harlingen, TX: Are Terrorists Interested in The Rio ... ...
