For the November 2004 election, the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, People for the American Way Foundation, and the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation are leading the most ambitious voter-protection program in the nation. This nonpartisan coalition of civil rights and civic organizations is committed to protecting the right of all citizens to cast a ballot on Election Day.

To accomplish this goal, the coalition has developed strategies that identify and respond to problems before Election Day through grassroots efforts, education and outreach to voters and election officials—and, where necessary, litigation. An Election Day hotline (1-866-OUR VOTE) will offer immediate, legal assistance to voters during the early voting period and on Election Day.

The Election Protection Program was created in the wake of the pervasive voting irregularities experienced disproportionately in minority communities during the 2000 Presidential Election cycle. Since that time, the Lawyers' Committee and our coalition partners have conducted EP programs covering contests across the country.

The coalition has targeted states with a history of voting irregularities and disenfranchisement. For these states, the coalition will create legal materials including a Voters’ Bill of Rights, which provides voters and advocates with necessary information about state election laws.

The Election Protection Program combines extensive, state specific legal research and resources with a coordinated grassroots field campaign. In addition to the support of volunteers and an ever-increasing list of coalition and strategic partners, national media outlets, such as the Tom Joyner Morning Show, have endorsed the program and agreed to publicize our efforts.

Imagine an America where abortion is illegal, where government employees could be fired for belonging to the wrong political party, where affirmative action in higher education has been abolished, and where the government could prosecute adults for consensual sexual activity.

Or how about an America where citizens can be held indefinitely, and the Environmental Protection Agency is stripped of its power and unable to safeguard our environment?

This America could become a reality!

With as many as three or four justices expected to retire in the next four years, the victor on November 2 will almost certainly have the chance to name two or more new justices to the U.S. Supreme Court. These days, most of the important decisions are decided by a slim margin, and even a single additional far-right vote could overturn decades of social justice progress -- and block new progressive legislation.

Tell your friends all about the thread by which our civil liberties are hanging in the High Court. Remind them that a Supreme Court justice serves for life -- not just four years. Talk about work-place and corporate regulations that could change overnight with a new Court. Make sure that when you talk to other voters about the Supreme Court and November 2 decision-making, you mention that President Bush has cited the Court's most extreme justices as his models for future appointments.

# Sign up to be a justice action advocate. Whoever wins the presidency this fall, we’ll continue to work hard to support fair-minded judges who respect the basic constitutional principles of equality and justice under the law.

# Spread the word. Each week between now and the election, we’ll send you an email describing how the future of the Court could impact different issues, as well as links to three issue fact sheets. Forward these emails and hand out printed copies of the issue sheets to your friends, coworkers, or groups where you are a member.

# Be informed. No matter what their views on specific Court issues, all voters should think carefully about the future of the Court in this election. These one-pagers show the impact of a far-right Supreme Court majority on things that voters care about. Read them, then pass them along to friends!
