9-11; 66% Call For New Probe of Unanswered Questions

Half of New Yorkers Believe US Leaders “Consciously” Failed To Act On 9-11; 66% Call For New Probe of Unanswered Questions by Congress or New York’s Attorney General,

New Zogby International Poll Reveals


(Utica, NY) - On the eve of the Republican National Convention, half (50%) of New York City residents and two in four (41%) of New York citizens overall say that some US leaders "knew in advance that attacks were planned on or around September 11, 2001, and that they consciously failed to act," according to the poll conducted by Zogby International. The poll of New York residents was conducted from Tuesday August 24 through Thursday August 26, 2004. Overall results have a margin of sampling error of +/-3.5.



The poll is the first of its kind conducted in America that surveys attitudes regarding US government complicity in the 9/11 tragedy. Despite the acute legal and political implications of this accusation, nearly 30% of registered Republicans and over 38% of those who described themselves as "very conservative" supported the claim.

The charge found particularly high support among adults under 30 (62.8%), African-Americans (62.5%), Hispanics (60.1%), Asians (59.4%), and "Born Again" Evangelical Christians (47.9%).


Less than two in four (36%) believe that the 9/11 Commission had "answered all the important questions about what actually happened on September 11th," and two in three (66%) New Yorkers (and 56.2% overall) called for another full investigation of the "still unanswered questions" by Congress or Elliot Spitzer, New York's Attorney General. Self-identified "very liberal" New Yorkers supported a new inquiry by a margin of three to one, but so did half (53%) of "very conservative" citizens across the state. The call for a deeper probe was especially strong from Hispanics (75.6%), African-Americans (75.3%) citizens with income from $15-25K (74.3%), women (62%) and Evangelicals (59.9%).

W. David Kubiak, executive director of 911truth.org, the group that commissioned the poll, expressed genuine surprise that New Yorkers' belief in the administration’s complicity is as high or higher than that seen in polls abroad. "We're familiar with extreme 9/11 skepticism in other nations where open media debate of US government complicity has been allowed. For example, on May 26th the Toronto Star reported a national poll showing that 63% of Canadians are also convinced US leaders had 'prior knowledge' of the attacks yet declined to act. Our mainstream news outlets never reported on this startling poll nor the mounting evidence that has led tens of millions of Canadians, Europeans, and now New Yorkers to think and feel this way. I think these numbers show that New Yorkers are fed up with the silence and are starting to study the facts on their own. This case is not closed and New York's questions are not going away."

Nicholas Levis of NY911truth.org, an advisor on the poll, agrees, "In many ways, these results truly are surprising, but we think they also express a pretty natural frustration with officials, journalists, and investigative commissions who continue to underestimate the country's hunger for the truth. The 9/11 Commission gave us a plenty of 'recommendations', but far more plentiful were the discrepancies, gaps and omissions in their supposedly 'final' report. How can proposals based on such deficient findings ever make us safe? We think these poll numbers are basically saying, 'Wait just a minute. What about the scores of still outstanding questions? What about the unexplained collapses of WTC 7, our air defenses, official accountability, the chain of command on 9/11, the anthrax, insider trading & FBI field probes? There's an awful lot more to this story that we need to know about.' Such a huge majority of New Yorkers now want a new investigation; it will be interesting to see how quickly Attorney General Spitzer responds."

SCOPE: The poll covered five areas of related interest: 1) Iraq - do New Yorkers agree that our leaders "deliberately misled" us before the war (51.2% do); 2) the 9/11 Commission - did it answer all the "important questions" (only 36% said yes); 3) the inexplicable and largely unreported collapse of the third WTC skyscraper on 9/11 - what was its number (28% of NYC area residents knew); 4) the question on complicity; and 5) how many wanted a new definitive 9/11 probe. Zogby International conducted interviews of 808 adults chosen at random in New York State. All calls were made from Zogby International headquarters in Utica, N.Y., from 8/24/04 through 8/26/04. The margin of error is +/- 3.5 percentage points. Slight weights were added to region, party, age, race, religion, and gender to more accurately reflect the population. Margins of error are higher in sub-groups.

On March 5, the Santa Barbara News-Press reported that a spokesman for the US State department claimed they were unaware of our full-page "Powell Lied?" ad in the NY Times on page A-15 on February 27, 2003. There is a commentary in this: the US State department knows that there are poison factories and weapons of mass destruction in Iraq but they do not know what is on a full-page ad in the NY Times.

Shall we infer incompetence, or a lie? Or an incompetent lie?

We know that Saddam Hussein’s terrible acts make him a man unworthy of defending, but we are NOT defending Saddam. Rather, it is the citizens of the United States of America that must be defended from tens of thousands more terrorists created by this, perhaps, unnecessary war. It is United States soldiers we must defend from senseless death and maiming. George Tenet of the Central Intelligence Agency (C.I.A.) said the greatest threat from terrorists and Saddam would come during and after we attacked Iraq.

Mutual Assured Destruction (M.A.D.) worked for more than 45 years against the U.S.S.R. which had nuclear weapons, ICBM missiles, and the submarines, to deliver and/or hide them.

We as citizens, seek to defend the Iraqi innocents, who have no chance of overthrowing Saddam, from death, maiming, and the further destruction of their homeland by the military campaign "Shock and Awe." We also defend the Constitution of the United States of America, the freedoms that President G. W. Bush is quickly dismantling with the first and second Patriot Acts.

These are the reasons that we are running "Powell Lied?" ads. We thought that if the public were aware of first Bush administrations' history of lies, we might avoid a second Gulf War.

The current administration is practically the same as the original one. The current rush to war is riding on Colin Powell's credibility before the United Nations. The majority of U.S. citizens want U.N. Security Council approval before rushing to war. Powell has been lying for two Bush administrations. He should have no credibility b y now.

President Clinton was impeached by the House of Representatives and tried by the Senate for lying about sex. Should not the Secretary of State receive at least the same type of for either lying, deceiving, or allowing others to deceive the United Nations, the United States Congress, and the American voters?

First, he, nor the current administration hasn’t admitted that the there was never a “poison factory“ in Iraq, as the U.S. government claimed. Neither he, nor the previous Bush administration, admitted Saudi invasion threat numbers were fabricated.

Second is the scope of the mistakes, considering that the technology our government has, it is unlikely that information was misread; if so, this shows gross incompetence. As Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces, Powell saw the satellite photos from the first Gulf War. He would have known that the first Bush administration was lying about the impending Iraqi invasion of Saudi Arabia.

Generals are sworn to uphold the United States Constitution, United States Code, and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. The President, as the Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. armed forces, and the Secretary of State are therefore subject to the UCMJ.

Third is the forum. This was not casual conversation. Powell was testifying to convince the U.N. Security Council, the citizens of the United States, and the United States Congress, to send soldiers to die. He had and still has an obligation to be absolutely sure. Negligence at this level is surely cause for dismissal.

War cost the citizens of the United States billions of dollars. If they are defrauded into spending money on war, that is a crime. If Powell saw fraud being perpetrated against the American people and US Congress, he was and is obligated to report it. He should have spoken up. By not speaking up, he is at least an accessory to a crime. We must impeach President Bush if he fails to dismiss Secretary of State Powell and prove his own ignorance of the facts.T
