HOW THE MIGHTY HAVE FALLEN:
Bill Clinton Pledges His Corporate Allegiance
By Cheryl Seal

On Sunday's "Meet the Press," Bill Clinton, a man I once
admired, revealed his true stripes. Tim Russert was
showcasing Clinton as a "senior statesmen" and "voice of
reason" on the topic of the Katrina disaster and
reconstruction. Yet, during the week Katrina plowed toward
the Gulf Coast, we heard not one peep from Mr. Clinton, even
though he, as former president, had to have been quite aware
of New Orleans' unique vulnerability. He had to have known
how FEMA had been undermined, having himself selected people
to posts there and having been quite aware of the
credentials of the chiefs Bush appointed. We did not see
Clinton fly down to the disaster zone during the dark days
that followed - even though Harry Connick, Jr. and others
easily made it in and out.
Yet now we see Clinton making the rounds of talk shows,
posing as "elder statesman" and "voice of reason." And
talking out of both sides of his mouth in his efforts to
appear "compassionate" and "wise" while supporting the
corporate interests that now help butter his and Hillary's
bread.
I listened to Clinton stating his great concern for the poor
of New Orleans in the wake of the storm. Yet I also heard
him matter-of-factly state how thousands of people weren't
going to be coming back to the city. Yet he proposed no
alternative to aid these "permanent refugees." And it must
not be ignored that in the past decade, thousands of the
poorest in New Orleans have suffered to an untold degree
from Pres. Clinton's caving into pressure to slash welfare
safety nets, a move that contributed greatly to the
escalating divide in the US between the very wealthy and the
very poor - a gap that shocked the Pope's envoy to the
disaster area last week.
I heard Clinton state the government must help rebuild - yet
noticed he refused to say how much they should directly
contribute, merely that it should be an "appropriate
amount." Appropriate to who? Meanwhile, he called for
"business" to carry most of the responsibility for
reconstruction. Which businesses? Halliburton? Or maybe the
Carlyle Group (which includes his new best pal George Bush,
Sr.). Or maybe GE - Clinton hangs out regularly with its CEO
Jeffrey Immelt. Or perhapsr BP, which has ties both to
Carlyle (via Jim H. Derryberry, see below) and Clinton, via
former Clinton chief of staff Thomas McLarty. Clinton
certainly sang the praises of GE and BP on "Meet the Press",
gushing how these companies are pioneering in alternative
energy. Yeah, right. GE and BP are pioneering in alternative
energy like Michael Brown is an expert on disaster
management.
The most telling statement of all made by Clinton, the one
that, for me, marks him out as having morphed completely
into a corporate toad was this: "I don't see how anyone,
with a straight face, can say that Katrina was caused by
global warming."
This statement could have been taken right off the latest
oil company-financed anti-climate change front site. And its
timing made its corporate motivation all the more obvious.
Just a few days before Clinton's appearance on "Meet the
Press," the science community released findings that showed,
in essence, a clear connection between the development of
monsters like Katrina and global warming. While global
warming does not cause hurricanes, it has most certainly
given rise to more intense storms, in terms of duration,
effective diameter, maximum winds and thus destructive
power. Katrina only grew to category 5 status in the Gulf of
Mexico because the waters there were not only abnormally
warm, the water heat extended downward nearly 200 feet! This
season, coming on the coat tails of a summer that ranked as
the hottest on record in many regions and in the top two
dozen hottest in others, is definitely connected to climatic
conditions.
So Clinton's statement, coupled within a 10 minute period
with praise of BP and GE was obviously a calculated blow to
science in favor of protecting and pandering to the fossil
fuel barons. What makes me especially sickened by this is
that Clinton has set himnself up as the "science-friendly"
president, the "man of the people." Yet he proved this month
that he has scant regard either for science OR the people.
"Clinton is a great man."
Gee...I don't know how anyone can say THAT with a straight
face.
Additional interesting info on Clinton and his "new friends"
BRITISH PETROLEUM:
BP was one of the first oil companies to be rewarded with
Iraqi oil after the Bush II invasion. This is from CorpWatch:
"In the hours and days before the United States and Britain
invaded Iraq, a team of British Petroleum (BP) engineers in
Kuwait taught combat troops from the 516 Specialist Team
Royal Engineers how to run the oil fields in southern Iraq.
As soon as the troops had secured southern Iraq, Robert
Spears, a Scottish manager from BP, was drafted by the
British government to help direct the effort to rebuild the
refineries.
In mid-July BP took possession of its reward -- one of the
first tankers of oil from Southern Iraq, having won 25% of
the initial sale of 8 million barrels of the existing
stockpiles of Iraqi oil. The previous month California-based
Chevron shipped back an equal quantity of oil from southern
Iraq."

Jim H. Derryberry, the managing director of "energy and
power" for the Carlyle Group (via their "Riverstone
Holdings" front) has close ties to BP. Jim H. Derryberry was
a former VP of Goldman Sachs - the nations top speculator in
fossil fuel (yep, that's right - the same speculators that
have helped to drive gas and oil prices up, even after the
Katrina disaster). Derryberry directly helped in the
financing and management of various British Petroleum
efforts

Clinton chief of staff Thomas F. "Mack" McLarty is a senior
advisor to the Carlyle Group. McLarty is also president of
Kissinger McLarty Associates, a partnership with Henry
Kissinger that "provides strategic advisory and advocacy
services to U.S. and multinational businesses involved in
Mexico and Latin America."

of Texas, if not the entire United States as revealed on
