9/11 Night flights
Sat Aug 26, 2006 21:21

I posted here some time ago about a night flight during the nationwide grounding of ALL civilian aircraft. Well so far I have (with some help)come up with Five flights on the evening of 9/11/01. What were they for? I don't know, but here they are if anyone is interested in helping find out. This from the FAA/BTS

carrier: US

What makes these flights even more interesting is that 4 out of the 5 planes should have been nowhere near the airport they departed from. So, if they are correct, there are at least four other flights that went unreported. Here are the flight history on 9/11 for each of those planes:

All four planes fly somewhere in the morning. Note that IAH-MCI was diverted, so you don't see an arrival time.

*************************** 1. row ***************************
tail_num: N178UW

*************************** 3. row ***************************
tail_num: N621AU
carrier: US

flight_num: 110
flight_time: 42
dep_time: 2001-09-11 07:40:00
arr_time: 2001-09-11 08:41:00
*************************** 4. row ***************************

Then, magically, all four planes appear on the west coast and fly west-east redeyes:

*************************** 5. row ***************************
tail_num: N178UW
carrier: US
origin: SFO
destination: PHL
flight_num: 112
flight_time: 279
dep_time: 2001-09-11 21:22:00
arr_time: 2001-09-12 05:21:00
*************************** 6. row ***************************
tail_num: N621AU
carrier: US
origin: SEA
destination: PIT
flight_num: 110
flight_time: 234
dep_time: 2001-09-11 22:43:00
arr_time: 2001-09-12 05:55:00
*************************** 7. row ***************************
tail_num: N24715
carrier: CO
origin: SFO
destination: CLE
flight_num: 408
flight_time: 236
dep_time: 2001-09-11 22:51:00
arr_time: 2001-09-12 06:04:00
*************************** 8. row ***************************
tail_num: N18658
carrier: CO
origin: PDX
destination: IAH
flight_num: 216
flight_time: 220
dep_time: 2001-09-11 23:55:00
arr_time: 2001-09-12 05:59:00

Interesting eh?

As far as the 5th plane, it arrived into LAX on Sep 10:

*************************** 4. row ***************************
tail_num: N34137
carrier: CO
origin: IAH
destination: LAX
flight_num: 1807
flight_time: 175
dep_time: 2001-09-10 22:07:00
arr_time: 2001-09-10 23:28:00

Then departed LAX on Sep 12th very early morning:

*************************** 5. row ***************************
tail_num: N34137
carrier: CO
origin: LAX
destination: IAH
flight_num: 126
flight_time: 151
dep_time: 2001-09-12 01:30:00
arr_time: 2001-09-12 06:20:00

It made no flights on Sep 11th, as I believe it was on maintenance that day. This was, in fact, the only reported flight on Sep 12th.

I have the stats on this airplane. What we are missing is information why these two aircraft were flying a regular route during a nationwide lockdown of the airspace in the US! They also show never arriving at their respective destinations, N621 AU shows departing Baltimore/Washington Int. on 9/13

I'm curious where you get that they never arrived? I show arrival times, and even time taken taxiing in and out...

I have not yet tracked down N178UW next move yet.
