COMING ATTRACTION: X-47B UNMANNED COMBAT AIR SYSTEM:

The Joint Unmanned Combat Air Systems (J-UCAS) program is a joint DARPA/Air Force/Navy effort to demonstrate the technical feasibility, military utility and operational value for a networked system of high performance, weaponized unmanned air vehicles to effectively and affordably prosecute 21st century combat missions, including Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD), surveillance, and precision strike within the emerging global command and control architecture.

"J-UCAS is a key transformational program within the Department of Defense’s portfolio. The capabilities offered by this family of systems can have profound implications on the Department’s future warfighting capability and force structure."
– Mr. Michael W. Wynne, USD(AT&L) (Acting), 23 June 2003

DARPA awards billion-dollar contract for combat UAV
By Dawn S. Onley, GCN Staff
August 19, 2004

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has awarded a five-year, $1 billion contract to Northrop Grumman Corp. to build the X-47B aircraft of the Joint Unmanned Combat Air Systems program, an unmanned aerial vehicle that will be used in combat.

A team of contractors, led by Northrop Grumman, will design, develop and demonstrate a minimum of three aircraft and three mission control systems under the contract. The system will include integrated sensing, communication and navigation equipment and a common operating system, according to a DARPA release (pdf file).

J-UCAS is a project being run by DARPA, the Air Force and Navy to demonstrate the feasibility of using networked high-performance, armed UAVs for combat.

Northrop Grumman’s team includes Lockheed Martin Corp. and Pratt & Whitney Military Engines Division in East Hartford, Conn.

Flight demonstrations on the X-47B will begin in 2007.
