THE COSTS OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION
Study Examines Impact of Illegal Aliens on Federal Budget

WASHINGTON (August 2004) — A new report from the Center for Immigration Studies is one of the first to estimate the impact of illegal immigration on the federal budget. Most research to date has focused on the state and local levels. Based on Census Bureau data, the study shows that the vast majority of illegal aliens work and most do contribute payroll taxes -- making billions of dollars in tax payments a year to Washington. However, the costs they impose are found to be even larger, creating a net fiscal drain on the federal budget that runs into the billions of dollars. The study also finds that if illegals were given amnesty, the net fiscal deficit at the federal level would nearly triple.

The study, entitled The High Cost of Cheap Labor: Illegal Immigration and the Federal Budget, is embargoed until August 25 at 9 a.m. The study will be available on line at www.cis.org.

The Center will release the report at a panel discussion on Thursday, August 25 at 9:30 a.m. in the Murrow Room at the National Press Club. The panel will include:
