Weekly Update: Lost Liberty - Cowardly Congress Capitulates
http://www.veteransforcommonsense.org/

Last weekend Americans suffered a crushing defeat of our liberty at the hands of a cowering Congress acting in a rush in the middle of the night after the courts ruled that President George W. Bush's domestic spying was illegal.

This is not the first time Congress did this. For the sake of our democracy, it better be the last, and it must be reversed.

Our government can now snoop through your e-mail, listen to your phone calls, read your snail mail, and do just about whatever it wants to spy on innocent American citizens without a warrant.

We might sympathize with Congress if there was an actual need for additional government power at the expense of our freedom. But no objective evidence has been provided to the public to support their dubious claim of imminent attack.

The tragic irony here is that the lies about terrorism and weapons of mass destruction told by Bush to start his pre-emptive war against Iraq, along with his failure to manage the fiasco, have backfired and created thousands of more terrorists killing our soldiers in Iraq.

Even the Washington Post denounced the White House bullying and intimination followed by appeasement and capitulation by Congress.

Who was behind this outrageous subversion of our freedom? None other than he discredited and embattled Attorney General, Alberto Gonzales. VCS raised the alarm about Gonzales in 2004, and we unsuccessfully tried to block his confirmation because he promoted the illegal torture of enemy prisoners of war and he advocated the illegal spying on American citizens.

Congress caved in on the torture issue last year. Rather than stand tall with soldiers and veterans who defend and protect our Constitution, Congress gave Bush a “get of jail free” card after the courts declared his brutal torture policies illegal.

Torturing enemy prisoners of war recklessly endangers our troops who get captured and it destroys our claim to the moral high ground.

As a result of the new laws, Bush and Gonzales can and will torture and spy on any Americans without legislative or judicial oversight. Our Constitution, the rule of law, and habeas corpus might as well not exist under this Administration.

How did your Representative or Senator vote? VCS lists the names of the Democrats who stand denounced for their debacle: they failed to block Bush's unbridled lust for executive power.

VCS believes America remains strong when we are free. And we believe our Nation becomes vulnerable when we lose our freedoms. These "after the fact" laws allowing Bush to do whatever he wants must stop now.

If you are concerned about your freedom, then call, write, or e-mail your elected officials, local newspapers, and demand an end to domestic spying and an end to torture. The alternative is that our Nation becomes the Leviathan our Founders fought to slay in 1776.

If you want to support an organization that honors the dedication of our soldiers and veterans who protect and defend our Constitution, please send a tax deductible contribution today.

Sincerely,

Paul Sullivan

WASHINGTON, Aug. 5 — President Bush signed into law on Sunday legislation that broadly expanded the government’s authority to eavesdrop on the international telephone calls and e-mail messages of American citizens without warrants.
