apfn@apfn.org A June 30 Zogby International poll found 59 percent of
Democrats believe President Bush should be impeached
if it is found that he did not tell the truth about
his reasons for going to war with Iraq.
Meanwhile, Democratic activists who launched
Democrats.com in 2000 have launched a sister site at
ImpeachCentral.com. This site is “dedicated to the
impeachment of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney for
violating the Constitution by lying to the American
people about Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction (WMD).
I’d like to offer these Democrats a simple challenge
to determine if they are motivated by a sense of
justice or partisan politics.
According to last year’s Duelfer report, Iraq's WMD
programs were essentially destroyed in 1991. However,
in December 1998 President Clinton ordered our
military to “attack Iraq's nuclear, chemical and
biological weapons programs.”
Even after Operation Desert Fox, the Clinton
administration continued to claim Iraq had WMD. In
fact, during the January 2001 transition period,
Secretary of State Madeleine Albright stated that the
Bush administration would continue to press Iraq to
destroy all its WMD as a condition of lifting
sanctions.
What were the consequences of keeping sanctions on
Iraq during the entire Clinton administration? For
one, a 1995 U.N. report estimated that 567,000 Iraqi
children had died as a result of sanctions. When
confronted with that figure on “60 Minutes” in 1996,
Albright responded, “I think this is a very hard
choice, but the price--we think the price is worth
it.”
Maintaining sanctions on Iraq also required additional
U.S. troops on the Arabian Peninsula. The number of
troops there grew from 6,340 in 1993 to 15,879 in
2000.
When CNN interviewed Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan in
March 1997, he was asked if he had a message for
Clinton. “'Mentioning the name of Clinton or that of
the American government provokes disgust and
revulsion,” Bin Laden said. “This is because the name
of the American government and the name of Clinton and
Bush directly reflect in our minds ... the picture of
the children who died in Iraq.'
Bin Laden also said U.S. troops on the Arabian
Peninsula was a “blatant provocation to over one
billion Muslims” and that Arabs would send Clinton
“messages with no words because he does not know any
words.”
Those “messages with no words” were delivered in
August 1998 when al Qaeda bombed two American
embassies, in October 2000 when al Qaeda bombed the
USS Cole, and, of course, on 9/11.
Given that Clinton’s “lies” concerning Iraq ultimately
led to 9/11, I ask Democrats who want to see President
Bush impeached over Iraq to call for Clinton to be
sanctioned in some way for lying about Iraq for eight
years. If these Democrats pursue the retroactive
impeachment of Clinton, it will be clear that they are
not motivated by partisan politics.

In the Orwellian world of modern day journalism, where a new form of
political correctness frames their every utterance, the language is
contracting. Because the goal of totalitarian thought control is to make the
expression of political incorrectness impossible, words are used, not to
make debating points, but to end all discussion.
