Drug Researchers Leak Secrets to Wall Street
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2005/080905R.shtml
Doctors testing new drugs are sworn to keep their research secret until drug
companies announce the final results. But elite Wall Street firms - looking
to make quick profits - have found a way to harvest these secrets: They pay
doctors to divulge the details early.
Amanda Griscom Little | Selling Out the Environment
http://www.truthout.org/issues_05/080905EA.shtml
Four years, two failed conference attempts and one filibuster after the
Republican leadership first introduced the Bush-backed energy bill into
Congress, the controversial legislation was signed into law Monday by the
president, yielding a major victory for the White House - and exposing the
continued inability of Democrats to rally around a unified vision and stay
on message.
Court: Tongass Log Plan Flawed
http://www.truthout.org/issues_05/080905EB.shtml
In a victory for environmentalists, a federal appeals court has tossed out a
management plan for the Tongass National Forest, saying the government
erroneously doubled the amount of old growth timber that could be logged
from the huge Southeast Alaska forest.
US Court Rejects Effort to Block Rules on Mercury Pollution
http://www.truthout.org/issues_05/080905EC.shtml
An effort by environmental groups to block the President George W. Bush's
administration from implementing its new regulations on mercury pollution
power plants was rejected by a federal appeals court. Without comment,
Judges David Sentelle and Janice Rogers Brown of the US Court of Appeals for
the District of Columbia denied a motion for an immediate halt to the
regulations, adopted in March by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Melanoma Is Epidemic. Or Is It?
http://www.truthout.org/issues_05/080905HA.shtml
The nation is in the grip of what looks like a terrifying melanoma epidemic:
melanoma is being diagnosed at more than double the rate it was in 1986,
increasing faster than any other major cancer. But why the numbers are
increasing is a contentious subject, so touchy that one dermatologist called
it "the third rail of dermatology."
West Nile Virus Season Arrives
http://www.truthout.org/issues_05/080905HB.shtml
Public health officials in Arlington County last week reported finding
mosquitoes infected with the West Nile virus in two traps in the county's
northern region. "Finding these [infected] mosquito pools is important
because we know the virus is active now," said Aftab Hussain, vector control
supervisor at the Arlington County Environmental Health Bureau. This means
the chance that people will get bitten by infected mosquitoes has increased,
he said.
Wal-Mart Fights to Split Sex Bias Suit
http://www.truthout.org/issues_05/080905LA.shtml
Wal-Mart tried Monday to derail the nation's largest-ever discrimination
suit, arguing that a single trial on the claims of 1.6 million women would
be neither fair nor manageable. But the retailing giant got little apparent
sympathy from a three-member federal appeals court. At issue is whether
Wal-Mart must defend against lawsuits by six individual plaintiffs or
against a single, colossal class action on behalf of nearly every woman who
has worked at one of its 3,400 stores nationwide since December 26, 1998.
Iraqi Women Urge Limited Sharia in New Constitution
http://www.truthout.org/issues_05/080905WA.shtml
At a meeting of prominent Iraqi women concerned that Islam will be enshrined
in Iraq's constitution, one of the things they asked for provided a
surprising glimpse of just where Iraq's winds of political change are
heading. While they demanded equal rights and an express ban on violence
against women, it was a joint statement by the 16 women that raised
eyebrows: "The Islamic sharia should be one of the sources of law."

Four in 9/11 Plot Are Tied to Qaeda in '00
By DOUGLAS JEHL
More than a year before the Sept. 11 attacks, a small, highly classified
military intelligence unit identified Mohammed Atta and three other future
hijackers as likely members of a cell of Al Qaeda operating in the United
States, according to a former defense intelligence official and a Republican
member of Congress.

A Look Into the Mirror
Whether we like it or not, the nation’s capital is the mirror image of the
rest of the country
By Manuel Valenzuela
Washington, like ancient Rome before it, has become, through the course of
years breathing the airs of moral degeneration, corruption and greed, the
monument for all that is wrong with the nation it represents, a new symbol
of debauchery and immorality, a decadent city on a hill whose once noble
foundations are now cracking under the weight of unscrupulous entities and
malfeasant activities.

Globalization And Its Discontents
By Saul Landau
