(Let’s not talk about the stringent anti-smoking laws recently enacted.) Now, with the Democratic National Convention in Boston, July 26-29, protesters are lining up to march around the Fleet Center and on Boston Common. This has some officials worried, and they are ready for riots, but it’s unlikely that civil disobedience will break out. The Boston Tea Party was an example of an extremely successful, non-violent protest. There was vandalism though. American patriots, dressed as Mohawk Indians, boarded ships of the East India Company, and threw 342 chests of tea into Boston Harbor. Today, those vandals are remembered on the third Monday each April with a Massachusetts holiday. We call it Patriots Day. Security will be tight for the DNC. Police and federal agents will be in full force, even though the Boston Police might be on the picket line too. Protestors will certainly want to catch the eye of the delegates to the convention, and more importantly, the eye of the TV cameras; most likely their actions will be by day rather than by night. Protesters will need permits issued by the City of Boston. Only certain times have been proposed by the City of Boston and the Secret Service. The ACLU is protesting the rules. The Boston Area Liberation Medic (BALM) Squad will offer medical assistance to protestors. Read their tips for being out on a hot day before your get sunstroke. The Boston Independent Media Center has Democratic National Convention Projects. They are a collective of independent media organizations and hundreds of journalists offering grassroots, non-corporate coverage. The Black Tea Society is holding a Really Really Democratic Bazaar on Boston Common from Noon – 8pm on Tuesday, July 27. A.N.S.W.E.R. Boston (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) will sponsor a march on Sunday, July 25. Their mantra will be “End the Occupation, Bring the Troops Home Now.” There are many resources and information on Boston’s protest movements.
