Shells crash onto Beirut airport runway

The Arab League has called for an emergency meeting of Arab foreign ministers to discuss escalating violence along the Lebanese border after Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers, an official said yesterday. Yemen called separately for an emergency Arab summit. Summits are much harder to arrange because Arab rulers are reluctant to raise expectations of tough action, diplomats say.

Israeli warplanes attack Beirut airport

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

BEIRUT, Lebanon -- Israeli warplanes struck the runways of Beirut's international airport in the Lebanese capital's Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs, forcing the closure of the facility, police and airport officials said.

Shells began crashing on a runway of the country's only international airport early Thursday during the ongoing Israeli air and sea assault against Lebanon, forcing diversion of two flights to Cyprus, airport employees said.

Israeli Army Radio reported that the object of the attack was to shut down air traffic in and out of the Lebanese capital.

A senior airport official announced the facility was closed shortly after the shells landed and asked all scheduled flights to divert to Cyprus, the neighboring Mediterranean island.

The main terminal of the half-billion-dollar facility built in the late 1990s was intact.

Fighting erupted in southern Lebanon on Wednesday after Hezbollah attacked Israeli border positions, capturing two Israeli soldiers. Eight Israeli soldiers were killed and Israel promised harsh retaliation, blasting bridges and roads in southern Lebanon throughout the day.
