Using 4 samples from Zarqawi, a voice analysis is revealing. Source: berg_analysis@yahoo.com Published: June 23, 2004 Author: VictorP For Education and Discussion Only. Not for Commercial Use. Zarqawi Voice Analysis – Part One (June 23) by VictorP I’m investigating the murder of Nicholas Evan Berg. Someone calling himself Sheik Abu Musab al-Zarqawi wants to take credit for this murder. Regardless of what he calls himself, I have a physical description of him and 4 minutes of his voice from the Nick Berg video. I don’t care if there are a half dozen Zarqawis running around Iraq, I’m only interested in the one who wants credit for the Berg murder. He’s about 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighs 160 to 175 pounds, has light or medium olive skin, wears a gold ring on his right pinky, speaks Arabic and English. He also has two good legs (an earlier Zarqawi had an artificial leg). Does his voice match previous Zarqawi audio statements or recent Zarqawi audio statements? I certainly do not expect the CIA, the FBI or the news media to be able to answer this question; I am willing to answer it on my own. I have begun a forensic voice analysis of all the Zarqawis with a primary objective of finding a match to the Berg Zarqawi and a secondary objective of determining if the Berg Zarqawi is likely to be the Jordanian fugitive, the original Zarqawi. The first voice sample of al-Zarqawi appeared in April 2004. Both the CIA and US military intelligence believed Zarqawi was dead before 2004. Secretary of State Colin Powell cited Zarqawi’s presence in Baghdad as a good reason for the invasion of Iraq (February 2003) but Zarqawi did not make it into the deck of 55 cards as a key target for US forces when the invasion began. Neither the CIA nor the FBI have made an official (on the record) evaluation of the first tape. The media, however, is under the impression that the CIA certified the tape as authentic. So when the second audio statement appeared in April, the CIA said nothing on the record and the media understood that to be same as authentication. Since we have no benchmark for Zarqawi’s voice, comparing the Berg Zarqawi to the first April Zarqawi will attempt an objective match/no match followed by a subjective finding as to the likelihood of either voice being that of the original Zarqawi. As of this writing, I have five volumes (or folders) of Zarqawi voice samples: Vol. I – 33 minute audio of al-Zarqawi released April 5, 2004. Vol. II – 7 minute audio of al-Zarqawi released April 29, 2004. Vol. III – 7 minute audio of al-Muqrin released April 27, 2004. (I use this as a control sample.) Vol. IV – 4 minute audio-video of al-Zarqawi released May 11, 2004. (The Berg video.) Vol. V – 16 minute audio of al-Zarqawi released June 22, 2004. Each volume contains test clips, as follows: ---------- A.60 --- a random 60-second portion ------------------A.10 ---- the first 10 seconds of A.60 ------------- A.60Q --- a quality-enhanced, clarified version of A.60 ----------------------A.10Q ---- the first 10 seconds of A.60Q ---------- B.60 --- another 60-second portion ------------------B.10 ---- the first 10 seconds of B.60 ------------- B.60Q --- a clarified version of B.60 ----------------------B.10Q ---- the first 10 seconds of B.60Q ----------- X.10Q --- my voice imitating the Arabic speaker for 10 secs (These volumes and test clips were prepared by an audiophile who has the equipment and the skills to produce good digital audio tracks.) I am using volunteers as test subjects and analysts. After a preliminary hearing test (comparing A.10 to A.10Q, for example) and a sanity test (comparing B.10Q to X.10Q), the subject is presented with ten reference clips (60 seconds each) and ten lead clips (10 seconds each). The subject can use either the 60-second or the 10-second clip for each question. The quality-enhanced versions are used in the test. The analysis is done in three parts. Part One (No Arabic required): ------- Sound recognition (the naked ear test by test subjects) ------- Sound patterns (frequency, intensity, voiceprint spectrograph ----------- comparisons by machine, with analysis by audio techs) Part Two (Arabic required): ------- Voice comparisons (characteristics, differences, similarities) ------- Forensic Linguistics (accent, dialect, vocabulary, education level) Part Three (Islamic scholarship required): ------- Islamic sect identification by form of Namaz & blessings ------- Islamic sect identification by application of Sharia & Fiqh ------- Islamic sect identification by allusions to Hadith and Sunna ------- Imam, prophet, school & sect references ------- Jihadist vs. political/nationalist language used ------- Orthodoxy of Quranic citations/allusions [for part three the full version of each file is used, not the test clips] ANSWER KEY TO REFERENCE FILES & CLIPS (1) Vol II A.60Q and A.10Q (Apr 29 Zarqawi) (2) Vol IV A.60Q and A.10Q (Berg Zarqawi) (3) Vol I B.60Q and B.10Q (Apr 5 Zarqawi) (4) Vol V B.60Q and B.10Q (Jun 22 Zarqawi) (5) Vol III A.60Q and A.10Q (Apr 27 Muqrin) (6) Vol IV B.60Q and B.10Q (Berg Zarqawi) (7) Vol V A.60Q and A.10Q (Jun 22 Zarqawi) (8) Vol II B.60Q and B.10Q (Apr 29 Zarqawi) (9) Vol I A.60Q and A.10Q (Apr 5 Zarqawi) (10) Vol III B.60Q and B.10Q (Apr 27 Muqrin) WHAT THE TEST SUBJECT SEES (1) (PLAY 10sec clip) - - - - - (PLAY 60sec clip) (2) (PLAY 10sec clip) - - - - - (PLAY 60sec clip) (3) (PLAY 10sec clip) - - - - - (PLAY 60sec clip) (4) (PLAY 10sec clip) - - - - - (PLAY 60sec clip) (5) (PLAY 10sec clip) - - - - - (PLAY 60sec clip) (6) (PLAY 10sec clip) - - - - - (PLAY 60sec clip) (7) (PLAY 10sec clip) - - - - - (PLAY 60sec clip) (8) (PLAY 10sec clip) - - - - - (PLAY 60sec clip) (9) (PLAY 10sec clip) - - - - - (PLAY 60sec clip) (10) (PLAY 10sec clip) - - - - - (PLAY 60sec clip) SAMPLE QUESTIONS: ** The voice in clip 8 is the SAME as the voice in clip 10. …….a) I STRONGLY AGREE [score +5 pts] …….b) I slightly agree [score +3 pts] …….c) I slightly disagree [score –3 pts] …….d) I STRONGLY DISAGREE [score –5 pts] …….e) I cannot tell [score 0 pts] ** The voice in clip 1 DOES NOT MATCH the voice in clip 2. …….a) I STRONGLY AGREE [score -5 pts] …….b) I slightly agree [score -3 pts] …….c) I slightly disagree [score +3 pts] …….d) I STRONGLY DISAGREE [score +5 pts] …….e) I cannot tell [score 0 pts] >>>> NEXT: First test group results; sound engineer Al tries to match the voices; the qualifications of my first group of Arabic listeners; the qualifications of my Islamic scholar(s) – (I have one so far).
