Iraq erupts in orgy of killing and car bombs

Smoking craters, twisted car wrecks and bodies burnt beyond recognition littered the streets of Mosul yesterday.

The city in northern Iraq was the scene of the worst bloodshed in a day of devastating attacks across the country. At least 62 people died and 220 were injured in a series of car bombings across Mosul, a city of vital importance as the hub of the oil industry. Explosions rocked the Iraqi police academy, two police stations and a hospital.

Lt Arkan al-Juburi, who arrived late for work at the Sheikh Fatih police station, said he was forced to leave the injured behind when insurgents opened fire on him from inside the shattered building.
