Constitution in the US Senate and backed up by Bush (but not Laura or
the Cheney’s) that has NO CHANCE of passing yet assures the God Hates
Fags crowd that all they need to do is whine a little and the GOP will
shamelessly squander taxpayer time and dollars in capitulation.

William Fisher | Calling Mr. Smith
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/060506A.shtml
William Fisher remarks, "For those gentle readers who've been frittering
their time away worrying about gas prices or Iraq or government snooping
or the levees in New Orleans, I have good news: It's OK to stop worrying
about these minor issues and instead focus your attentions on the
transformational event of our century - The Federal Marriage Amendment."
Cindy Sheehan | The Abominations of War From My Lai to Haditha
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/060506B.shtml
Cindy Sheehan writes, "The double standard that our leaders have set for
themselves and the troops is amoral and corrupt. I have not yet seen -
anywhere in the discussion of this topic - acknowledgment that Haditha
is the worst war crime committed by American or coalition troops, or
that the entire war is a war crime."

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/060506C.shtml
Gunmen in police uniforms raided bus stations Monday in central Baghdad,
kidnapping at least 50 people, including drivers and passengers
preparing to travel outside Iraq. The attackers also grabbed people

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/060506D.shtml
An Islamic militia said Monday it has seized Somalia's capital after
weeks of bloody fighting and 15 years of anarchy in this Horn of Africa

Elizabeth Drew | Power Grab
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/060506E.shtml
Elizabeth Drew points out that "During the presidency of George W. Bush,
the White House has made an unprecedented reach for power. It has
systematically attempted to defy, control, or threaten the institutions
that could challenge it: Congress, the courts, and the press. It has
attempted to upset the balance of power among the three branches of
government provided for in the Constitution; but its most aggressive and
consistent assaults have been against the legislative branch."
John Brown | America's Fading Glow
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/060506F.shtml
"There are several reasons for the decline of America's soft power. The
most immediate is President George W. Bush's aggressive foreign policy.
Since our internationally condemned attack on Iraq, our country is seen
as the illegitimate sheriff that shoots first and asks questions later,"
writes John Brown.
Most Democrats Want Progressive Candidates
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/060506G.shtml
Democrats want the party to turn forcefully against the war in Iraq and
to investigate, censure or even impeach President Bush should the party
win control of Congress this fall.
For Deals, Jefferson Built Web of Firms
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/060506H.shtml
In the case of Rep. William J. Jefferson (D-La.), court records, sworn
affidavits, plea agreements and search warrants show Jefferson made
quite a deal, one of several involving at least seven business entities,
nearly a dozen family members and hundreds of thousands of dollars
sloshing through bank accounts, all for Jefferson's personal benefit.
Kyoto, Afghanistan - The Conservative Strategy Has Little Support
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/060506I.shtml
Canada's Conservative government is bucking public opinion in its
extension of its troops' deployment in Afghanistan and in its trashing
of the Kyoto protocol. Quebec's opposition parties call on Quebec to
lead the way back to Kyoto as it did in the beginning of this century.
Supreme Court to Hear Schools Race Case
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/060506Q.shtml
The Supreme Court said Monday it will decide the extent to which public
schools can use race in deciding school assignments, setting the stage
for a landmark affirmative action ruling. The court rejected a similar
case in December when moderate Justice Sandra Day O'Connor was still on
the bench. The outcome of this case will turn on her successor, Samuel
Alito.
VIDEO | Pennies of Promise
A Film by Rebecca MacNeice
http://www.truthout.org/multimedia.htm
Pennies of Promise is a newly formed citizen action group in West
Virginia. On Tuesday, May 30, the group launched a national campaign at
the foot of the State Capitol to raise awareness for the Marsh Fork
Elementary School in Sundial, West Virginia. The school children are
dealing with a host of medical issues they believe are connected to the
recently constructed coal silo, which sits 150 feet away from the
school, and the toxic slurry pond, which is approximately 300 feet away
from the school. Retired school teacher Mary Porter brought $400 dollars
in pennies collected from school children in Harlem as a donation to the
state of West Virginia to aid in the construction of a school in another
location.
