WASHINGTON, May 15 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President George W. Bush
on Monday announced that he would send some 6,000 National
Guard troops to the U.S. -Mexico border to stop illegal
immigration.

In a televised address to the nation at the Oval Office, he
said the U.S. government did not yet have full control of
the border and he wanted a change.
However, Bush noted that the move did not mean to militarize
the border, and he would not round up some 12 million
illegal immigrants who were already in the country and drive
them out.
The address was made only hours after the U.S. Senate
resumed the debate on an immigration reform bill.
The immigration issue had prompted nationwide protests by
hundreds of thousands of immigration supporters in recent
months. Enditem
