The fast-approaching 6/6/06

Start counting down to a unique moment

Early Wednesday, at two minutes and three seconds after 1 a.m., the time and date will be 01:02:03 04/05/06.

It won't be Halley's Comet or the swallows returning to Capistrano, but it will happen only once in most of our lifetimes.

Such moments are not unusual: Many celebrated in some fashion the entry of the New Year of 1/1/01. That brought to some a mysterious displacement to the previous century when their grandparents feted the same date.

Who can have forgotten 1/2/03 only three years ago? Or the sadly little noticed 5/5/05? Many may reflect on the fast-approaching 6/6/06, its like last seen 40 years ago on 6/6/66, when its sinister connotation raised few hackles.

These moments, minuscule on any scale of importance, still catch our attention. Numeric coincidence holds a vast sway over the public's imagination.

So folks early Wednesday morning may briefly free themselves of life's concerns for this transcending, resplendently fanciful moment, an immaterial event, the blink of an eye: The hour, the minute, the second, the day, the month, the year sweeping past in their serial inevitability.
