On April 3, the Independent frowned on prosecutors in the Michael Jackson trial for seating on the stand Dr. Stan Katz ("Jackson witness is linked to America's most infamous child sex claims"), a therapist at Children's Institute International (CII), the psychologists whose examinations of children enrolled at the McMartin preschool in Manhattan Beach, CA incited a bitter legal battle, ending with the children and their therapists publicly discredited Ð in large part due to allegations of Satanism and ritual abuse that the media assured us were unfounded and "bizarre." "After interviewing 400 current and former students," the Independent notes, "it concluded that 369 of them had been sexually abused, lured into underground tunnels, forced to perform bizarre forms of devil-worship including the disinterment [sic] of coffins, raped at a car wash, and filmed with their adult abusers for pornographic purposes. The problem with CII's 'discoveries' was [partly] that they failed to meet the basic test of plausibility."
If so, then the press is a study in hypocrisy - the very same newspapers that assure us Satanism is an "urban legend" are rife with reports of Satanic cult murders, cemetary desecrations, rapes, and so on. If the children in the McMartin case "failed to meet the basic test of plausibility," then the same must be said of the press, to wit:
