Senate Fails to Pass Measure to End Iraq War
MyFox Detroit, MI - 57 minutes ago
"Five years of war, the president's current approach in

In the Senate, after weeks of skirmishing, Republicans
easily turned back Democratic legislation requiring a
troop withdrawal to begin within 120 days. The measure
set no fixed deadline for completion of the
redeployment, but set a goal of March 31, 2008. The vote
was 50-48 against the measure, 12 short of the 60 needed
for passage.

First, I'd like to congratulate Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR)
and the Bechtel
Corporation, which are the construction companies most
likely to benefit
from the reconstruction of Iraq. Contracts in the region
of $1 billion
should soon coming your way, chaps. Well done! And what
with the US
dropping 15,000 precision-guided munitions, 7,500
unguided bombs and 750
cruise missiles on Iraq so far and with more to come,
there's going to be
a lot of reconstruction. It looks like it could be a
bonanza year.

SADDAM TURNS HIS BACK ON GREENBACKS
Europe's dream of promoting the euro as a competitor
to the U.S. dollar may get a boost from SADDAM HUSSEIN.
Iraq says that from now on, it wants payments for its
oil in euros, despite the fact that the battered
European currency unit, which use to be worth quite
a bit more than $1, has dropped to about 82 cents.
Iraq says it will no longer accept dollars for oil
because it does not want to deal "in currency of the
enemy."
The switch to euros would cost the U.N. a small
fortune in accounting paperwork changes. It would also
reduce the interest earnings and reparations payments
that Iraq is making for damage it caused during the Gulf
War,
a shortfall the Iraqis would have to make up.
The move hurts Iraq, the U.N. and the countries
receiving
reparations. So why is Saddam doing it? Diplomatic
sources say switching to the euro will favor European
suppliers over U.S. ones in competing for Iraqi
contracts,
and the p.r. boost that Baghdad would probably get in
Europe would be another plus.

The 89-9 vote paved the way for consideration of the
Democratic legislation, which would start troop
withdrawals
within four months and calls for - but does not require
- the complete removal of combat troops by the end of
March 2008. The vote came after many Republicans
abandoned the tactic they had used earlier this year to
twice prevent the Senate from considering legislation
aimed at forcing an end to the war.
