Bernard Leitaer, Co-founder of the Euro currency, was the key speaker at a conference held in October in Denver, Colorado, for top-level business executives and government leaders from around the world. There he announced his plans for the ‘Terra’, the world’s first ‘global trade reference currency.’

The aim of this is to solve the problem caused for international trade by the collapse of the gold-dollar standard in 1971. This has led to an increase in currency speculation as a result of which a currency can now lose much of its value in a matter of hours often as a result of nothing more than mere speculation or rumour. This unstable monetary situation has resulted in the many foreign exchange crises that have affected no less than 87 different countries over the past 25 years, of which Argentina early in 2002 was the latest victim.

According to the website of this conference ( http://www.futureofmoneysummit.com/terra-project.php  ) the Terra will work by creating

‘a reference currency fully backed by a dozen or so of the world’s most important commodities and services in the global market’.

The project aims to mobilise

‘the vast energies of the international corporations - the most influential decision makers shaping our collective future at this point - towards a sustainable future’.

The pattern for development is very similar to the way the Euro was brought in. The first stage was to create a trade reference currency used by businesses while the people of the Eurozone continued to use their own national currencies. Then, when this was established, the national currencies were abolished and the Euro currency brought in for the people to use.

At the same time as the conference considered this possibility, it also looked at the future of how we buy and sell, noting the development in money technology over the past 100 years. The biggest need in the developments being outlined is to prevent identity fraud or theft. ID cards with biometric information stored on them (your fingerprints, iris scan etc) are proposed, using new technology to ensure that you are who you claim to be when you make a financial transaction.

Better than ID cards which can be lost or stolen is the system launched in the USA which has just moved into Europe with outlets in Switzerland and Russia. Known as ‘Veri-chip’ it is a device the size of a grain of rice containing a radio frequency identification. This can be inserted beneath the skin and its unique verification number can be captured by briefly passing a scanner over the VeriChip.
