You're right that tobacco should not be prohibited, for all the
reasons you give, even though its combination of severe addiction
and high lethality from lung cancer and other damage make it by
far the most harmful psychoactive drug.

However, forcing children to breathe tobacco smoke definitely
_is_ serious child abuse. It causes outright illness in many
kids, and anxiety/depression and inhibition of breathing (and
thus reduction of consciousness) in many more.

Parents can easily go outside or to a separate room to smoke,
or even blow the smoke out a window (and stick the cigarette
in a long-necked bottle when they're not drawing on it). So
prohibition of smoking around their children does not produce
anything like the aggravation of their addiction and consequent
extreme anxiety that total prohibition would cause, nor all the
social effects of corruption, unfair burden on the poor, black
market, etc., that you mention.

I find breathing cigarette smoke for more than a minute or so
extremely unpleasant. Being forced to breathe it for most of
my life would be real torture.

By all means be active against the prohibition of tobacco (and
other drugs), but not against forbidding its use around children.
The latter is similar to legislating restraint seats in cars,
childproof caps on bottles of toxic substances, and banning of
lead-based paint. It's wrong to injure children's health,
especially in ways they have no control over. Smokers have the
right to harm themselves, but not others, especially children.
It's that simple.
