Edwards, Paul spar over Branch Davidian comments

WASHINGTON (AP) - Two Texas congressmen tangled Wednesday in an unusually personal dispute provoked when one denounced the other for saying on TV that the public fears being ''bombed'' in a Waco-like government raid.

Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco, demanded that Rep. Ron Paul apologize to the American people for saying during a C-Span interview Wednesday that ''there are a lot of people who fear that they may be bombed by the federal government at another Waco.''

''I mean, these people committed no crimes,'' the Surfside Republican added.

Said Edwards: ''A member of Congress making that kind of extremist statement simply encourages the kind of radical hatred that leads to Oklahoma City (bombings).''

Paul demanded an apology of his own, accusing Edwards of engaging in a ''vicious attack'' for petty, partisan reasons.

''He ought to apologize to me for being so cheap, taking a cheap shot at me,'' said Paul, who noted that Democratic leaders already have targeted him for defeat in 1998.

''Maybe I'll ask him to debate his defense of burning up little children by the federal police,'' Paul said. ''What crime did the children cause in order for them to be out there, have their building burned down and be burned alive?'' he asked. ''Why doesn't (Edwards) have any compassion for the children?''

Eighty-one Branch Davidians, including 25 children, died in a fiery inferno after federal law enforcement teargassed their compound in 1993. The feds were trying to end the 51-day stalemate that resulted after a botched raid by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
