COAST TO COAST AM 2/28/06 -

Nanotechnology is already here.
Bioconvergence - Progenitor of the Nanotechnology Age
Previous, recent "ages" of technology and economic
development, with substantial, and irreversible social and
cultural influences, such as the "Computing Age",
subsequently evolving into the "Information Age" - driven by
the combination of the internet, and ubiquitously
distributed computing capacity, are only the minimal
progenitors of what is about to emerge, "the Nanotechnology
Age", the first stage progenitor of which is the phenomena
of bioconvergence.

The internet, the most complex knowledge and process
transceiving platform ever created, is emerging as an
operational ecology, itself populated with, and becoming
evermore dependant on artificial life, evolved
intelligences, biological metaphors in computing. The fabric
of the Internet is evolving as the experiential conveyance
engine of the human / internet symbiosis existence manifold.

Nano Night -
Journalist Douglas Mulhall and 'historian of the future,'
Charles Ostman (related graphics) addressed ways in which
nanotechnology and other cutting edge approaches can be used
to protect and evolve human existence. Mulhall, who appeared
first, noted that the St. Louis area (where the New Madrid
fault is located) is possibly due for a huge quake, and that
buildings aren't prepared for it. New nanotech applications
in aerogel products could be placed in walls and windows,
allowing them to withstand a great quake or tornado, he
detailed.
Dangers from space, such as life-killing gamma rays also
need to considered, said Mulhall, who advocated developing
space programs with the eventual goal of propagating our
species off world, so its continuance could be assured in
the event of a such a cataclysm. Ostman, who appeared during
the last two hours, enthused over new brain research. He is
particularly interested in developments occurring at the
boundary between biophysics, quantum physics and
consciousness. In this new frontier, the "quantum artifacts"
of consciousness might be harnessed for both personal and
planetary enhancement, he said.
In terms of economical energy sources, Ostman outlined how
we could genetically modify microbes that produce methane in
the ocean in order to harvest vast amounts of hydrogen.
Mulhall shared a different method towards energy self
sufficiency-- laying out a huge array of next-generation
photovoltaic cells across Nevada.

Nanotechnology is already here. The biotech industry
provides much of the self assembling, self organizing
biomolecular materials which enables the first “layer” of
nanotech applications, among which is the next generation of
nanocomputing platforms. This next generation of computing
capacity will directly fold back into the biotech industry,
an IT centric industry heavily dependant on supercomputing
capacity pushed to its ultimate limits.
The diagram shown below indicates the relationshsips between
computationally intensive bioinformatics and in-silico
biology (note the biological sytem cellular "schematic"),
proteomic molecular components which are directly applied to
biomedical genopharmacology, and "structural proteomics"
applied to next generation computing platforms which are
constructed with these proteomic materials.
Current bioinformatics systems are heavily dependant on
biological metaphors in computing, processes which mimic
biology, such as neural networks, evolutionary algorithms,
and other biologically inspired mechanisms. Note the actual
volumetric screenshot of a self-evolved neural network.
