Oversight and Accountability

Over the last four years, the Republican Congress failed to conduct oversight on the Iraq war and failed to hold the Administration accountable for the conduct of the war. In contrast to this dismal record, the new Democratic-led Congress has held 52 hearings on Iraq in the last five weeks, exercising vigorous oversight and demanding accountability from the Administration on the Iraq war.

Next week, the House will take up a resolution on the war in Iraq. All voices will be heard as we debate this critical issue. Our Democratic resolution will commend our brave men and women in uniform for their courageous work in Iraq and Afghanistan and will express our strong disapproval of the President's proposal for an escalation of troops in Iraq. This is the first step in many we will take for a new direction in Iraq. Democrats are committed to holding the President accountable on the Iraq war and will not give the President a blank check on Iraq.

Speaker Pelosi Discusses Global Warming at Committee Hearing

Yesterday, Speaker Pelosi appeared before the House Science and Technology Committee hearing on global warming. Scientific evidence suggests that to prevent the most severe effects of global warming, we will need to cut global greenhouse gas emissions roughly in half from today’s levels by 2050. The Bush Administration continues to oppose mandatory limits on greenhouse gases, restating this position immediately upon the release of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report last week. At the hearing, scientists and experts reported on the IPCC climate change report, confirming that climate change is indisputably underway and states with 90 percent certainty that greenhouse gases released by human activities are the main cause of global warming. These findings have opened a window into our future, in which harsh consequences could be blunted by our prompt action.

The 110th Congress will address the issues of energy independence and global warming. Energy independence is an economic, environmental and a national security issue. A critical part of the energy effort must be to address global warming. Throughout the world, there is a growing chorus of voices in favor of taking serious and sustained action on global warming: from scientists to Fortune 100 CEOs, from evangelical Christians to environmentalists, from farmers to hunters and anglers. We must address these challenges now in order to protect the planet and provide a better future for our children.

President’s Budget Is More of the Same Fiscal Irresponsibility and Misplaced Priorities

This week, the President offered more of the same fiscal irresponsibility and misplaced priorities in his fiscal year 2008 budget. After turning a surplus into mountains of debt, President Bush is trying to claim that he is setting our nation on a track to balanced budgets. Democrats welcome real action on that front, but this budget is nothing but rhetoric. He leaves out major expenses, and the President simply does not balance the budget by 2012, as he claims.

The President's budget places a higher priority on huge tax cuts for multi-millionaires than on urgent national needs. It cuts Medicare and Medicaid by $300 billion, while failing to reinvest those funds to help cover any of the 47 million uninsured Americans and also not providing SCHIP sufficient funds to reduce the number of uninsured children. The new funding requests for the war in Iraq give the American people no hope that President Bush has plans to reduce our military involvement in Iraq for the foreseeable future – in fact, just the opposite. If the President’s requests are approved, the United States will spend nearly $50 billion more on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in the current fiscal year than was spent in fiscal year 2006, and will spend at least an additional $142 billion next fiscal year. These huge sums demand the most rigorous congressional scrutiny possible. Although our troops will get the resources necessary to meet their needs, we cannot afford to mortgage our children’s future to the President’s misguided policies in Iraq.

The Plane

"This is a silly story and I think it's been unfair to the Speaker."
- Tony Snow, White House Press Secretary

As the Democratic majority has continued to push meaningful legislation to address the American people’s concerns, Republicans have passed their time peddling a manufactured controversy over the Speaker's travel arrangements. Speaker Pelosi stated yesterday, "We didn't ask for a larger plane, period" and House Sergeant at Arms Bill Livingood, in charge of House security since 1995, issued a statement yesterday stating, “The fact that Speaker Pelosi lives in California compelled me to request an aircraft that is capable of making non-stop flights for security purposes, unless such an aircraft is unavailable...I regret that an issue that is exclusively considered and decided in a security context has evolved into a political issue."
