Terror tech: A robotic plane dropped a bomb Sunday in a test of technology the U.S. military hopes will one day replace human pilots on dangerous combat missions, AP says. “Few people realize that the Predator and other unmanned aircraft also have been flying in civilian airspace above California and other states for years,” Bruce V. Bigelow writes in The San Diego Union-Tribune. Russian and U.S. experts “will meet this month to assess terror tactics, from hacking into systems to seizing a weapon,” The Christian Science Monitor’s Scott Peterson recounts. The problem with national ID card proposals isn’t their “totalitarian potential” nor the social and economic dislocations they might spawn, Bruce Schneier writes in Crypto-Gram: “My objection ... is much simpler. It won’t work. It won’t make us more secure.” Manalapan, Fla., may install a surveillance system that will automatically track the license tags and facial biometrics of everyone who drives into town, The South Florida Sun-Sentinel says. Empire North is marketing an ID Sniper rifle, designed to “implant a GPS-microchip in the body of a human being, using a high powered sniper rifle as the long distance injector,” The Inquirer observes. Georgia Tech researchers say their drug sniffing Dog-on-a-Chip device “also holds some promise for homeland security,” The Bergen County (N.J.) Record reports.
