Some people bluntly say they don't read.

Others offer an excuse: They would read if only they had the time.

I will also be blunt: People who don't read cheat themselves. By not reading, they limit what they can achieve, make mistakes they could avoid, and miss opportunities that could improve their lives. Finally, as the gaps in their knowledge become apparent, they must reconcile themselves to not being taken seriously.

Before going any further, I must make clear that I do not urge you to spend the rest of your days nestled in a cozy spot at the local library. Far from it.

Actively involved in politics since the early 1960's at the local, state and national levels, I understand the importance of action. Nothing moves unless it is pushed. Political activists elect candidates, pass or repeal laws and determine public policy. But while boundless energy and enthusiasm are essential in activists, something else is necessary. To be successful leaders, activists must also be well-informed.

LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE

To provide this - and other - training seminars, the United Republican Fund is working with the Leadership Institute - the nation's premier trainer of tomorrow's conservative leaders. Founded in 1979 by Morton C. Blackwell, the Leadership Institute is the oldest and most respected training organization for conservative leaders at the local, state and national levels. They have trained more than 40,000 people nationwide, including such individuals as Erika Harold (2003 Miss America), Grover Norquist, Ralph Reed, Governor Bill Owens (CO), Governor Terry Branstad (IA), Senator Mitch McConnell, and thousands of other conservative "movers and shakers".

The Leadership Institute (LI) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, non-partisan organization. It does not endorse, support or oppose candidates or proposed legislation. LI does not discriminate with respect to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, marital status or partisan affiliation. LI has an open admissions policy; all programs are open to the public.

DuPAGE COUNTY REPUBLICAN PARTY

The DuPage Republican Party is made up of 730 Precinct Committeemen and thousands of volunteers and Republican enthusiasts. Illinois State Senator Kirk Dillard is the Chairman of the DuPage Republican Party.

DuPage County , Illinois is approaching 1 million people in population and is " America 's Most Republican County ." Today, there are more than twice as many Republican voters as Democrat voters in DuPage County . In the 2002 Primary Election, over 70% of voters pulled a Republican ballot, and in 2000, President George W. Bush carried this county by 15 percentage points. Every elected official in DuPage County is a Republican. The county is represented by Republicans in three congressional districts, eight state senate districts, 13 state representative districts, by ten county-wide elected offices, 18 county board seats, six Forest Preserve seats, and in every elected office on the township level.

COOK COUNTY REPUBLICAN PARTY

The Cook County Republican Party [called the Cook County Republican Central Committee] is the leadership organization of the Republican Party in Cook County. The present Chairman, Gary J. Skoien, was elected to a two-year term in mid-April, 2004. As chairman, he is responsible for setting the political tone for the CCRCC and oversees the by-laws, budget, fundraising, press conferences/releases and the day-to-day operations of the Committee.

Comprised of the 80 Republican Committeemen and their Ward/Township organizations in Cook County, the primary responsibilities of the CCRCC are appointing election judges, developing active and vibrant local organizations, organizing voter registration drives, supporting Republican elected officials, finding good, honest and ethical Republican candidates, providing good and appropriate educational materials for constituents, candidates and campaigns and to serve as the Republican liaison in their local communities. Their most important role is to “get out the Republican vote and to protect our vote” on Election Day. Under the direction of each Committeeman, the Wards/Townships hold regular meetings which are open to the general public and fellow registered Republicans are encouraged to attend.

WILL COUNTY REPUBLICAN PARTY

Will County, the fastest-growing county in Illinois , is the tenth fastest-growing county in the nation. With over half a million people countywide, Will County Republicans won their area for President George W. Bush in 2004 by bringing in 129,000 voters to John Kerry’s 115,000. Jack Partelow is Will County GOP’s chairman.
