Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Cathie Martin, a former spokeswoman for
Vice President Dick Cheney who testified at the CIA leak trial
of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby on Thursday, is expected to say she
told Libby that a vocal critic of the Bush administration was
married to a CIA operative. On Wednesday, several witnesses
seemed to be suffering from lapses in memory, including the
first two to testify for Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald.
Libby, the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney,
is accused of lying to investigators who were trying to
determine who had leaked the identity of CIA operative Valerie
Plame to journalists. Plame is married to former ambassador
Joseph Wilson, who openly criticized the Bush administration.
Fitzgerald's first two witnesses were Marc Grossman, an official
at the State Department, and Robert Grenier, the former CIA Iraq
mission manager.
Grossman testified Wednesday that he and Libby had talked about
Plame, and he admitted there were differences in the statements
he had initially given to FBI agents. However, he said he could
not explain the discrepancies.
Grenier said he had told Libby that Wilson's wife worked for the
CIA, but 18 months earlier he had told investigators that he had
no recollection of telling Libby about Plame.
"I developed a growing conviction that I must've said it,"
Grenier said. "It's like, 'Wake up and smell the coffee. You
must've told him.'"
Cross-examination has been slowed because of such accounts, and
lawyers have brought in heavily redacted documents and e-mails
to jog witnesses' memories.
Fitzgerald said he has several witnesses whose memories are not
in accord with Libby's.
He said during his opening statements, "Having a bad memory is
not a crime. The defendant is not charged with having a bad
memory."
