When Germany surrendered unconditionally in 1945, our conquerors never quite believed how irrevocably our allegiance had ended with the collapse of the Third Reich. In the French Zone of occupation where I lived, the mere possession of a copy of Mein Kampf could lead to a term in the French labor camp. When we were released from captivity and went back to school, we were not allowed to study any of Hitler's writings for fear we might become reinfected by the Nazi bacillus. Ironically, many French collaborators had the same problem.
In 1946, the Nuremberg war crimes trial had conveniently sentenced our top 21 leaders to death or prison terms without the presence of a single German judge. This imposed "victor's justice" freed us from any further, personal reckoning. I listened to the verdicts at Nuremberg standing outside the Palace of Justice.
After that catharsis, and for the next two decades, however, I, like the vast majority of Germans, remained in a state of collective amnesia concerning the Nazi past.
In 1953, the Konrad Adenauer Bundestag had instituted a program of restitution, partly to gain sympathy for Germany, which, so far, has paid out over $60 billion, most of it to Jewish victims.
But it was only in the late 1960s with its beginning social upheaval that young Germans began to ask painful questions of their fathers. Today, every German school teaches the lessons of the Holocaust, and legislators have passed laws making its public denial or denigration a felony. He makes the point that Hitler's dictatorship didn't begin with mass murder but with the unopposed suppression of free speech.
On May 10, 1933, when not a single university president or Christian leader protested the burning of hundreds of "unGermanic" books by the students of the University of Berlin, Germany surrendered its freedom. The very first victims of the bookbanning edict that quickly followed because of that acquiescence were Jewish writers.

If more Germans had bothered to take the book seriously during the troubled years of the Weimar Republic, Hitler's ghost wouldn't be haunting us into the next millennium.
