Sept. 11 widow: Government hides truth

ORTSMOUTH - Ellen Mariani isn’t the only person who believes the government is hiding information about Sept. 11, 2001, from the public. The nearly 60 people who came to hear her speak Wednesday evening at South Church were also curious to learn the truth.

The Derry native said she refused to accept a settlement offer worth several hundred thousand dollars from the government for the survivors of Sept. 11 victims because it meant she would have to forfeit her right to sue the government for answers about the terrorist attacks on New York’s World Trade Center.

Instead of receiving compensation, Mariani filed a civil complaint under the RICO [Racketeer Influence and Corrupt Organizations] Act against President Bush and other federal leaders charging criminal conspiracy before, during and after Sept. 11.

"Ellen doesn’t want money," said Philip Berg, Mariani’s lawyer. "Ellen wants the truth."

Mariani’s husband, Neil, was on board United Airlines Flight 175, the plane that crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center. Mariani herself left two hours before Neil did, on a different flight to California to attend their daughter’s wedding.

"I’ve had a lot of sad experiences in losing him, but now I’m losing my country," said Mariani.

Berg, a lawyer from Pennsylvania, said he and Mariani are simply asking for "legitimate answers" regarding flight information, intelligence reports and President Bush’s daily briefings.

"We really believe that the government was involved," said Berg.

He questioned why certain government officials were told not to fly on Sept. 11 and why standard procedures to scramble military jets to search for planes once they fly off course for 10 minutes weren’t used in the case of the two planes that crashed into the twin towers.

Berg went on to encourage those in the audience to become more vocal in seeking answers from the government.

"Your representatives should be demanding that the administration release this information," he said. "They’re lying to us, and we don’t want to wait 40 years to find the truth."

Although Berg said he and Mariani are aware that threats or intimidation might be used against them, he added that citizens must not be afraid to question President Bush and his associates about their knowledge of the attacks.

Many in the audience voiced their praise for Mariani’s lawsuit and said they also believe Bush is trying to hide information from the public.

Lizza Morgan, who lives in the Durham area, said she signed Mariani’s petition asking the government to respond to her questions.

"It has to be found out who knew what, when," said Morgan.

For now, Berg said he expects the court in Philadelphia, where the lawsuit was filed, to make a decision on accepting Mariani’s case by the end of February. Although he thinks the judge will dismiss the suit, he said they will not stop until documents are released and the truth is uncovered.

Mariani was the first family member to file suit against United Airlines in New York in 2001. She was also the first to file a lawsuit against President Bush and others, including Kenneth Feinberg, the government’s special counsel for the Victim Compensation Fund. She filed that lawsuit late last month. Mariani said the lawsuit is aimed at proving that the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11 were no surprise to the government. She believes the federal government was aware the attacks would take place. "I’m 100 percent sure that they knew," she said.
