Rice sells Iraq's positive results

CHICAGO, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice told the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations there is ample evidence of an Iraqi weapons program.

As part of the administration's effort to emphasize the positive results of the Iraq war and justify the ouster of Saddam Hussein, Rice cited findings of U.S. weapons expert David Kay, who delivered a preliminary report to Congress last week.

Rice noted though Kaye and his team had yet to find actual weapons of mass destruction, they did find evidence of programs involving brucella and hemorrhagic fever, attempts to buy missiles from North Korea and efforts to find a VX stabilizer for chemical weapons.

Rice noted President Bush has said the country cannot afford to wait until a threat is imminent because "terrorists and tyrants" are unlikely to announce their intentions.

She emphasized the need for a stable Iraq but, echoing a recent speech by Bush, urged patience in building a democracy. She said it is essential to building a peaceful Israel and Palestinian state.
